Conspiracy of Fools This seemed like a good time to reiterate her instructions. Conspiracy of Fools 'For the outside world, I think I have some credibility, and they're not going to believe someone would jump into the frying pan if they thought there was anything wrong'' It would send a good signal to the marketplace, Skilling continued, and from there, they could go to NewYork, make the rounds with the banks, and calm everybody down. People who like to cut corners and shade the truth often can't resist crowing about it. Doing What Matters Formulas abound for choosing good people. Doing What Matters But you must have a good grasp of how to run an organization, or it's just not possible to lead one. Doing What Matters So on the face of it, selling the Duracell business and cutting any further losses seemed like a pretty good idea. Doing What Matters Since it's never good to tilt at windmills, this was another seemingly plausible approach. Doing What Matters The superficial application of concepts, even of good, well-grounded concepts, will get you in deep trouble. Doing What Matters Those are good concepts. Doing What Matters We all know the expressions: A miss is as good as a mile; there's no prize for second best; winning is everything. Doing What Matters Let me make the point using the food sector, where I spent a good part of my career. Doing What Matters If It Sounds Too Good to Be True ... Doing What Matters And all too many Wall Street analysts were not only willing to join in these hyperbolic estimates, they also often went to the next level by saying that while high-single-digit growth would be good, the real leaders would consistently return low-double-digit annual revenue growth! Doing What Matters Good analysts would welcome that freedom to generate estimates without being restricted by a company's own guidance. Doing What Matters Then go to the middle of the P&L, where you control costs and get savings to invest in good things like research, new-product development, and marketing that supports the brands. Doing What Matters The time spent preparing for these well-staged events doesn't yield good returns in terms of impact and influence. Doing What Matters Your peers are good people, and they're OK with this stuff. Doing What Matters In other words, what matters is gaining a good understanding of what lies ahead-the problems, the opportunities, the possible approaches and likely obstacles-before I even set foot in the office. Doing What Matters So Country Time was conceived and positioned as a convenient form of lemonade with a good-old-fashioned lemonade taste. Doing What Matters As a case in point, the executive who headed our information-technology function claimed that his unit was not just good, or very good, it was 'the best IT department in the world.' Doing What Matters It was a good, healthy, supportive relationship that was especially important during a time that was just crazy.' Doing What Matters Good information, full discussion of options, and adequate time for analysis-all are essential. Doing What Matters 93 Delivering at Warp Speed Betsy's group had a good understanding of the market. Doing What Matters If DiGiorno's launch were delayed by a year, there was a good possibility that one or more of our competitors would acquire the same freshdough technology. Doing What Matters While his people were good inventors, they weren't the best in a number of areas; many inventions outside the company could be commercialized into new-product successes. Doing What Matters During that period, Schick introduced several new products that culminated with the Xtreme3-a three-bladed disposable that offered a reasonably good shave at a price of $1.35 per unit. Doing What Matters DOING WHAT MATTERS they should buy Gillette's Good News disposable that sells for fifty cents per unit, they thought. Doing What Matters If they try a new improved shaving cartridge, they know immediately whether there is good value for the higher price. Doing What Matters So he had a good chance to observe and think about what he was seeing. Doing What Matters Even though it was clear that there had been an absence of good leadership and a loss of discipline, I never considered doing anything other than what I said in my day one communique to the organization. Doing What Matters I said that sounded good, and asked for the rating of the leadership group on the 1 to 5 scale. Doing What Matters But effort that does not turn into results is not good job performance. Doing What Matters Bob, a veteran of the finance group, held key roles as Gillette went through both its good times and then its challenges. Doing What Matters It doesn't do a lot of good to expose a few people to a special course or program, regardless of its merits, if the concepts and materials are foreign to the rest of the management group and organization. Doing What Matters If a leader comes in and all he or she wants to do is tell me about the good things they have done, I would think to myself, You are so enamored with what you have achieved that you are not thinking about what else you have to do. Doing What Matters The other aspect of integrity relates to the more popular usage of the word-honor, ethics, and good practice. Doing What Matters Mike Miles likes to say that often a good strategy is nothing more than outstanding execution. Doing What Matters Good leaders know how to listen to the criticism that is helpful, ignore the criticism that is not, and be able to tell the difference between the two. Doing What Matters Companies and People Fail When Static A good leader also recognizes that people, just like organizations, fail when they are static. Doing What Matters The status quo never is good enough. Doing What Matters There are too many good smart people to settle for smug self-promoters. Doing What Matters • Good decision-making skills: Select thinkers who are both quantitative and qualitative, and proceed systematically. Doing What Matters • Leadership skills: Look for someone who is a good communicator, motivator, and organizer and cares about team success as well as personal gain. Doing What Matters Good process fills that void. Doing What Matters As Martha Stewart would say, 'It's a good thing.' Doing What Matters On the other hand, you will have good and early warning about those plans that are headed in the wrong direction so you can do whatever it takes to straighten things out. Doing What Matters A company's financial performance-the growth of its sales, earnings, and market shares; the introduction of successful new products; the management of its working capital and assets-all of these metrics and the many others that should be part of a good operating plan provide a real gauge of how good all elements are: its products, people, brands, practices, and systems. Doing What Matters A good annual plan, along with the quarterly priorities that orchestrate it, lets everyone know exactly how they're performing and how well they will be rewarded. Doing What Matters Good news is welcome at the off-sites. Doing What Matters Polite collegiality is good, except when it stands in the way of progress. Doing What Matters How will I know if you do it? Do you have a survey? What's the metric? If the answer is nothing, then you don't have a good objective.' Doing What Matters Yet there is no getting around the fact that good process with lengthy quarterly meetings takes a lot of time. Doing What Matters So you often get some good feedback about different functions and units as a result of the homework that precedes the rating event. Doing What Matters Attendance at the weekly meetings was mandatory, with no substitutions without prior approval and a good reason. Doing What Matters Then the BU presidents spend a good deal of time reworking and finalizing their reports, before sending them to Jim Kilt's office electronically prior to noon on Friday.' Doing What Matters For example, Doug Conant, the CEO who has turned around the Campbell Soup Company, worked for me twice-once as my top plan You Don't Want to Look good process does two th ters accountability. Doing What Matters It helps keep a goo sense at the end of the day done, what is their motiva thusiasm are at any point Dave Rickard, now CFO of CVS, is another executive whom I've had the good fortune to work with twice-first, when I headed Kraft USA; next, when he was CFO of RJR Nabisco and helped recruit me to become CEO of the Nabisco part of the food-tobacco combine. Doing What Matters 171 You Don't Want to Look Like a Wimp Dave believes that good process does two things-creates alignment and fos ters accountability. Doing What Matters It helps keep a good tally of that so you have a good sense at the end of the day of what everybody on his team has done, what is their motivation, and what their energy and enthusiasm are at any point in time.' Doing What Matters And the good news is that the action takes place with your allies-people who will be key members of your management team, plus as many people as you can reach throughout the entire organization. Doing What Matters 187 GOOD IDEAS ARE EASY TO COME BY • Good ideas, well executed, make the difference. Doing What Matters Good ideas are easy to come by; they're meaningless unless they are well executed. Doing What Matters a You have a good understanding of the job ahead. Doing What Matters With a day one like that, there will be a lot of other good days ahead. Doing What Matters Sometimes, the irrational exuberance comes from the other direction-a run of bad luck rather than good fortune. Doing What Matters We had said we would dramatically cut costs, and we had made good gains on a number of fronts. Doing What Matters Compiling a strategic plan involves a lot of input, analysis, and assessment, but lots of good templates exist on the how-to of strategic plans. Doing What Matters At Nabisco and again at Gillette, I asked the purchasing people, How good are the prices we get on personal computers for the organization? At both companies, the responses were swift and the same: 'The best prices. Doing What Matters Not a good matchup of talent to need. Doing What Matters A good way to think about Total Innovation is to think about a pyramid. Doing What Matters One good example was our Mach3 Turbo Champion razor, which went from concept to rollout in only seven months. Doing What Matters Achieving TI would make the difference between Gillette being a very good company or being the best company. Doing What Matters China is a good example. Doing What Matters DOING WHAT MATTERS And as good as Gillette's relationship was with Wal-Mart, the merger with P&G made it stronger. Doing What Matters We wanted to build scale, and the combination of Gillette with Colgate, which had been considered but abandoned by Colgate and past Gillette CEOs, represented a good option. Doing What Matters Throughout my career, I've had good relations with the news media and with politicians. Doing What Matters Good, but limited. Doing What Matters That acknowledgment of a broad-based group effort is not what makes for good stories. Doing What Matters DOING WHAT MATTERS So why do I say that I've basically had a good experience with the media? Because with a few notable exceptions, most of my contacts have been positive. Doing What Matters That experience was as good as it gets, and I don't think it was atypical. Doing What Matters I told her at the start that Gillette still had issues, but I felt there was a good story to be told about the progress we had achieved. Doing What Matters She said that she had heard good things about what was happening, but would spend several weeks researching and investigating to find out whether people knowledgeable about the company would affirm it or had a different perspective. Doing What Matters Something may look good on paper, but until you hear the words coming from your mouth, you cannot tell if it sounds like you, or like the person who worked on the draft with you. Doing What Matters And with good reason. Doing What Matters And with good reason. Doing What Matters So it was difficult to ask provocative questions of a good and steady source, even if his charges seemed rather thin and attenuated. Doing What Matters The list of our involved managers was lengthy, and it underscores the point that leaders must lead within their companies and in appropriate areas outside that will benefit the company and will be good for the sector and public at large. Doing What Matters Regarding politicians, the good ones really need our help because there are more than enough bad ones causing problems. Doing What Matters Open-ended interviews and discussions are never a good idea. Doing What Matters As good as you are in your position, you're not as skilled at responding to questions as a broadcaster or reporter is at asking and pursuing them. Doing What Matters Unless there are very good reasons for agreeing to an interview or media placement, you're better off taking a pass. Doing What Matters DOING WHAT MATTERS The observations range from aphorisms such as 'Easy access to money causes undisciplined decisions' and 'Bad businesses will beat good managers every time' to some anecdotes that drive home the importance of relationships and how career-long associations with your business cohorts can help with your success. Doing What Matters Fortunately, the people whom I have felt good about have reciprocated the feelings. Doing What Matters It is something that also makes you feel good. Doing What Matters 'Bad Businesses will Beat Good Managers Every Time' On Gillette's blade business: 'It's pleasant to go to bed every night knowing there are two and a half billion males in the world who have to shave in the morning.' Doing What Matters On buying a business and unsuccessfully trying to turn it around: 'Bad businesses will beat good managers every time.' Doing What Matters For example, when we were developing our plans for TAG body spray, several of the initial marketing approaches stepped over the line of good taste and decency. Doing What Matters You'll have a good moral compass for how you should be acting. Doing What Matters The whole thing was good fun. Doing What Matters Without an ethos that assumes you are never as good as you will become, you will stall out and your people will put their performance on cruise control. Doing What Matters As Warren Buffett notes, you have to acknowledge that there are those 'bad businesses;' and bad business situations will beat ''good managers' every time. It is good to see the increase in journal articles and books dealing with ethical and professional issues in the helping professions. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The consultation process would help from a legal perspective, because if other professionals agreed with her course of action, she would have a good chance of demonstrating that she had acted in good faith. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Which of the following do you consider to be the most important personal characteristic of a good counselor? a. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions c. breaking confidentiality without a good reason to do so. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The ability of a therapist to establish a good personal relationship with a client is essential, but it is not sufficient by itself to bring about behavioral change. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Good will. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions If you find that you're doing most of the work and that you seem to care more about some clients than they care about themselves, you have good reason to believe that your own needs, not those of your clients, are being served. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Perhaps their main motivation for being in counseling is that someone else thought it would be 3 a good idea. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions A practicum in which you're getting supervision and have an opportunity to discuss your work might be a good place to bring up the issue of perfection. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It can take a good deal of ego strength to be willing to share your mistakes and apprehensions. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions • It is a good idea to have activities and interests besides therapy as a way of renewing yourself. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions What kind of results would you look for in working with clients? How would you determine the answers to such questions as 'Is the counseling doing any good? Is my intervention helping my client make the changes he or she wants to make? How effective are my techniques?' 7. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Suppose, for example, that an unhappily married man knew or surmised that you really thought he was wasting good years of his life in the marriage. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions In each case, assess what factors in your life would either help or hinder you in establishing a good working relationship with the client we describe. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Although a counselor's values will surely affect this process, our position is that counselors should be clear enough with their values that they can find ways to make their values work for the good of the therapy process. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Ronald sees himself as a good Christian and a believer in the Bible. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions If they expect certain behaviors from the patients, there is a good chance that the patients will adopt these behaviors and live up to the staff's expectations. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions To minimize such negative reactions it is a good practice to explore a minority-group member's views and feelings about testing and to work with the client in resolving attitudes that are likely to affect the outcome of a test. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Although Dr. Hamner agrees that some ethical issues may be raised by her failing to inform her clients, she thinks that good research designs call for such procedures. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Since we contend that the therapeutic relationship is built on good will and trust, we oppose any practices that are likely to jeopardize the trust that clients have toward the helping professionals. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The inclusion of placebos places a good deal of responsibility on the investigators to protect subjects. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Ibrahim and Arredondo (1986) emphasize that attending to cultural issues in research is not only ethical behavior but also good scien- 1 tific practice. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions We think there is a good rationale for supervision that includes attention to the trainee as a person. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions What would you say and do if you found yourself as an intern in this situation? Would it be ethical to follow this directive and not inform your clients that you were a trainee and that you were receiving supervision? Do you agree or disagree with the rationale of the administrators? Might you accept the internship assignment under the terms outlined if you could find any other field placements? Suggested Readings This would be a good time to review the ethical codes of the various professions, which are found in the Appendix. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The administrators contend that your clients are paying for the services they receive (on a sliding scale, or ability-topay basis) and that it is not psychologically good to give them any information that might cause them to conclude that they are not getting the best help available. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Rather than focusing on legalistic documents, it is a good idea to develop informed-consent procedures that will increase client understanding about the counseling process and will be likely to forestall dissatisfaction and, therefore, legal action (Deardorff, Cross, & Hupprich, 1984). Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It is good policy for counselors to inform their clients that they are meeting with others and may be talking with them about some of the sessions. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions We think it is a good practice for them to inform their clients that they are likely to use some of their clinical experience in their writing and in giving lectures. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions When it does become necessary to break confidentiality, it is a good practice to inform the client of the intention to take this action and also to invite the client to participate in the process. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The Duty to Protect Suicidal Clients Many therapists inform their clients that they have an ethical and legal obligation to break confidentiality when they have good reason to suspect suicidal behavior. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It is a good idea to document in writing the steps you take in crisis cases, for documentation may be necessary to demonstrate that you did use sound professional judgment and acted within acceptable legal and ethical parameters. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Client Rights, Confidentiality, and Duty to Warn and Protect 199 It should be noted that Szasz is not claiming that suicide is always good or a morally legitimate option; rather, his key point is that the power of the state should not be used to either prohibit or prevent people from taking their own life. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions He told his therapist that he was convinced he had been deluding himself in thinking that anything in his life would change for the better and that he felt good about finally summoning the courage to end his life. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions A good therapist gets involved in the client's case without getting involved with the client emotionally. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions He sees the mark of good therapists as the ability to help their clients reach the stage of autonomy, where they no longer need a therapist. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions He replies: 'Well, I'm not sure whether coming here is doing that much good or not. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It feels good to come here, and I usually continue thinking after our sessions about what we discussed, but I'm not coming any closer to decisions. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions I suppose I really don't do that much outside, and I know I'm not changing that much, but I feel good when I'm here.' Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Some peer counselors, for example, claim that friendships before or during counseling are actually positive factors in establishing trust and good, productive therapeutic relationships. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Unless they take due care and act in good faith, they are liable to a civil suit for failing to do their duties as provided by law. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Malpractice can be seen as the opposite of acting in good faith. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions In discussing professional standards of conduct Woody (1984) points out that human-service professionals need not be superior but must possess and exercise the knowledge and skill of a member of the profession in good standing. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions • Engender positive feelings between yourself and clients, since good relationships substantially reduce the likelihood of a malpractice action (Knapp, 1980). Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It is a good idea to have access to an attorney for consultation in matters that are problematic. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Agreeing with He are Saeki and Borow (1985), who believe that the aims of treatment in both worlds are linked to striving for the good life as defined in the respective dominant cultures. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions A counselor may often focus on what is good for the individual and neglect the impact of the individual's change on the significant people in that person's life or the impact of those significant people on the client. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Western counselors are often systematically trained in attending skills, which include keeping an open posture, maintaining good eye contact, and leaning toward the client (Egan, 1986). Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions In some cultures lack of eye contact may even be a sign of respect and good manners. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Sue (1981a, p. 42) gives a good example of how counselors often feel that their Black clients are hostile and angry and may misread certain other behaviors. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions I frequently have good ideas and proposals, and I see myself as willing to do the work necessary to translate these plans into actual programs. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Therefore, he argues, it is unrealistic to expect ethical principles in a field that has not decided what constitutes good professional practice. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Some point to the danger that inadequately trained people might do more harm than good; others claim that the poor who need treatment will receive inferior service; still others fear that more and more paraprofessionals will be allowed to practice without the close supervision and intensive training they need. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Paraprofessionals without knowledge and skills who are allowed to practice without careful supervision can do more harm than good. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Perhaps there are good reasons why certain policies have been established, even if they seem to restrict your freedom in your job. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions By ordering our priorities we can decide which compromises we can make without sacrificing our integrity and which positions cannot be compromised in good faith. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions In conjunction with this, good communication with directors and supervisors is essential. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Working with others on special projects is a good way to renew yourself and a source of inspiration that can suggest new directions. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions A person who comes from a troubled family is generally a poor candidate to become a good family therapist. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The priority placed on the good of the family as a unit may lead to individual risks. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It is a good policy to provide children with treatment alternatives and enlist their participation in Ethical and Professional Issues in Marital and Family Therapy 313 defining goals for their therapy. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions He said that, although he was usually good about keeping his feelings inside, this time he 'just lost it.' Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Hesitantly, he agreed that it would be a good idea to have the entire family come in for therapy. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Such explanations are a good way to begin the process of counseling couples and families, for the clients can know from the outset what views and values are likely to influence the nature of the therapy. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Since nonsexist values are the basis for all good therapy, a single set of standards should be adopted for all counselors/ therapists [p. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions To do so, they must be able to recognize when sex therapy is indicated, and they must be aware of good referral sources. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions It is a good policy for leaders to have a clear rationale for any technique they use. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions We support this guideline, for we think it is a good practice for leaders to provide between-session intervention in cases where this is justified. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions How will the nature of the group affect your approach? What might you do differently with this group, compared with a group of people who want the experience? This is a good situation to role-play in class, with several students playing the reluctant members while others practice dealing with them. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions What makes a good helper? A person-centered approach. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Eclecticism in psychological theorizing: Good and bad. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions The social worker should treat colleagues with respect, courtesy, fairness, and good faith. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions For applications and further information, write to: It is a good idea while you are a student to begin your identification with state, regional, and national professional associations. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions I might be inclined to barter my therapy services for goods if I were working with needy clients. Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions A few examples of dual relationships, as described by Keith-Spiegel and Koocher (1985), are combining the roles of teacher and therapist (which we discussed in Chapter 2); trading therapy for goods or services; bartering with needy clients; providing therapy to a friend's relative; socializing outside therapy sessions; becoming emotionally or sexually involved with a client or former client; and combining the roles of supervisor and therapist (discussed in Chapter 5). Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions Rather than unequivocally condemn bartering of goods or services for therapy, for example, we ask you to honestly reflect on how such an arrangement could complicate the therapeutic relationship. as they all sat together in her sunny room, the babies kicking and crowing on the floor, mother and sisters working near, and father reading, in his pleasant voice, from the wise old books which seemed rich in good and comfortable words, as applicable now as when written centuries ago, a little chapel, where a paternal priest taught his flock the hard lessons all must learn, trying to show them that hope can comfort love, and faith make resignation possible. Little Women Meg made many moral rules, and tried to keep them, but what mother was ever proof against the winning wiles, the ingenious evasions, or the tranquil audacity of the miniature men and women who so early show themselves accomplished Artful Dodgers? Little Women 'But I don't think the little we should spend would do any good. Little Women It's proper to use good words, and improve your vocabilary,' returned Amy, with dignity. Little Women How happy and good we'd be, if we had no worries!' Little Women It was a comfortable room, though the carpet was faded and the furniture very plain, for a good picture or two hung on the walls, books filled the recesses, chrysanthemums and Christmas roses bloomed in the windows, and a pleasant atmosphere of home peace pervaded it. Little Women Somehow the sight of the old shoes had a good effect upon the girls, for Mother was coming, and everyone brightened to welcome her. Little Women 'It is only another name for trying to be good, and the story may help us, for though we do want to be good, it's hard work and we forget, and don't do our best.' Little Women You can do as you please, but I shall keep my book on the table here and read a little every morning as soon as I wake, for I know it will do me good and help me through the day.' Little Women 'How good Meg is! Little Women 'You see I felt ashamed of my present, after reading and talking about being good this morning, so I ran round the corner and changed it the minute I was up, and I'm so glad, for mine is the handsomest now.' Little Women It is good angels come to us!' Little Women There was a good deal of laughing and kissing and explaining, in the simple, loving fashion which makes these home festivals so pleasant at the time, so sweet to remember long afterward, and then all fell to work. Little Women There was a good deal of rustling and whispering behind the curtain, a trifle of lamp smoke, and an occasional giggle from Amy, who was apt to get hysterical in the excitement of the moment. Little Women A good deal of hammering went on before the curtain rose again, but when it became evident what a masterpiece of stage carpentery had been got up, no one murmured at the delay. Little Women Hugo, getting thirsty after a long warble, drinks it, loses his wits, and after a good deal of clutching and stamping, falls flat and dies, while Hagar informs him what she has done in a song of exquisite power and melody. Little Women 'Aunt March had a good fit and sent the supper,' cried Jo, with a sudden inspiration. Little Women Yours is as good as new, but I forgot the burn and the tear in mine. Little Women I'll tell you how we can manage, each wear one good one and carry a bad one. Little Women 'Have a good time, dearies!' Little Women 'It is one of her aristocratic tastes, and quite proper, for a real lady is always known by neat boots, gloves, and handkerchief,' replied Meg, who had a good many little 'aristocratic tastes' of her own. Little Women That put Jo at her ease and she laughed too, as she said, in her heartiest way, 'We did have such a good time over your nice Christmas present.' Little Women You see I've been abroad a good many years, and haven't been into company enough yet to know how you do things here.' Little Women She liked the 'Laurence boy' better than ever and took several good looks at him, so that she might describe him to the girls, for they had no brothers, very few male cousins, and boys were almost unknown creatures to them. Little Women With many thanks, they said good night and crept in, hoping to disturb no one, but the instant their door creaked, two little nightcaps bobbed up, and two sleepy but eager voices cried out... Little Women This idea tickled Jo's fancy and put her in good spirits, but Meg didn't brighten, for her burden, consisting of four spoiled children, seemed heavier than ever. Little Women 'I like good strong words that mean something,' replied Jo, catching her hat as it took a leap off her head preparatory to flying away altogether. Little Women Believing that they could not begin too early to cultivate energy, industry, and independence, their parents consented, and both fell to work with the hearty good will which in spite of all obstacles is sure to succeed at last. Little Women She brought it bits of bouquets, she read to it, took it out to breathe fresh air, hidden under her coat, she sang it lullabies and never went to bed without kissing its dirty face and whispering tenderly, 'I hope you'll have a good night, my poor dear.' Little Women She sang like a little lark about her work, never was too tired for Marmee and the girls, and day after day said hopefully to herself, 'I know I'll get my music some time, if I'm good.' Little Women She was a great favorite with her mates, being good-tempered and possessing the happy art of pleasing without effort. Little Women Everything was good, well made, and little worn, but Amy's artistic eyes were much afflicted, especially this winter, when her school dress was a dull purple with yellow dots and no trimming. Little Women Aunt woke up and, being more good-natured after her nap, told me to read a bit and show what frivolous work I preferred to the worthy and instructive Belsham. Little Women But she let old Belsham rest, and when I ran back after my gloves this afternoon, there she was, so hard at the Vicar that she didn't hear me laugh as I danced a jig in the hall because of the good time coming. Little Women It isn't funny, like Jo's story, but I thought about it a good deal as I came home. Little Women Wasn't it good of him? Little Women I had all my girls to comfort me at home, and his last son was waiting, miles away, to say good-by to him, perhaps! Little Women 'Once upon a time, there were four girls, who had enough to eat and drink and wear, a good many comforts and pleasures, kind friends and parents who loved them dearly, and yet they were not contented.' Little Women 'These girls were anxious to be good and made many excellent resolutions, but they did not keep them very well, and were constantly saying, 'If only we had this,' or 'If we could only do that,' quite forgetting how much they already had, and how many things they actually could do. Little Women One discovered that money couldn't keep shame and sorrow out of rich people's houses, another that, though she was poor, she was a great deal happier, with her youth, health, and good spirits, than a certain fretful, feeble old lady who couldn't enjoy her comforts, a third that, disagreeable as it was to help get dinner, it was harder still to go begging for it and the fourth, that even carnelian rings were not so valuable as good behavior. Little Women 'His grandpa does not know what's good for him, and keeps him shut up all alone. Little Women Shut the window, like a good boy, and wait till I come.' Little Women 'Is Beth the rosy one, who stays at home good deal and sometimes goes out with a little basket?' Little Women She's my girl, and a regular good one she is, too.' Little Women Laurie colored up, but answered frankly, 'Why, you see I often hear you calling to one another, and when I'm alone up here, I can't help looking over at your house, you always seem to be having such good times. Little Women Mother is so splendid, she'd do you heaps of good, and Beth would sing to you if I begged her to, and Amy would dance. Little Women Laurie turned red again, but wasn't offended at being accused of bashfulness, for there was so much good will in Jo it was impossible not to take her blunt speeches as kindly as they were meant. Little Women Jo liked his good breeding, and didn't mind having a laugh at Aunt March, so she gave him a lively description of the fidgety old lady, her fat poodle, the parrot that talked Spanish, and the library where she reveled. Little Women That does me no end of good. Little Women exclaimed the boy, looking at her with much admiration, though he privately thought she would have good reason to be a trifle afraid of the old gentleman, if she met him in some of his moods. Little Women A second look showed her that the living eyes, under the bushy eyebrows, were kinder even than the painted ones, and there was a sly twinkle in them, which lessened her fear a good deal. Little Women 'Yes, sir, he seems a little lonely, and young folks would do him good perhaps. Little Women 'Just her father's way of doing good. Little Women But finding them free and easy, she was so herself, and made a good impression. Little Women Too many sugarplums are not good for him. Little Women Good night, Doctor Jo.' Little Women 'Good night, Laurie!' Little Women 'Good night, Jo, good night!' Little Women The lady was good and lovely and accomplished, but he did not like her, and never saw his son after he married. Little Women We'll all be good to him because he hasn't got any mother, and he may come over and see us, mayn't he, Marmee?' Little Women 'How we got out of the Slough and through the Wicket Gate by resolving to be good, and up the steep hill by trying, and that maybe the house over there, full of splendid things, is going to be our Palace Beautiful.' Little Women 'The good lady next door says he is studying too hard and needs young society, amusement, and exercise. Little Women What good times they had, to be sure. Little Women Good day, madam.' Little Women I dislike Mr. Davis's manner of teaching and don't think the girls you associate with are doing you any good, so I shall ask your father's advice before I send you anywhere else.' Little Women 'That's good! Little Women 'I should not have chosen that way of mending a fault,' replied her mother, 'but I'm not sure that it won't do you more good than a bolder method. Little Women You have a good many little gifts and virtues, but there is no need of parading them, for conceit spoils the finest genius. Little Women 'Just listen to me a minute, and be a good child,' said Meg soothingly. Little Women I'll be ever so good,' pleaded Amy, looking as pathetic as she could. Little Women Poor Jo tried desperately to be good, but her bosom enemy was always ready to flame up and defeat her, and it took years of patient effort to subdue it. Little Women It was only half a dozen little fairy tales, but Jo had worked over them patiently, putting her whole heart into her work, hoping to make something good enough to print. Little Women As Jo received her good-night kiss, Mrs. March whispered gently, 'My dear, don't let the sun go down upon your anger. Little Women It was bitter cold in the morning, she dropped her precious turnover in the gutter, Aunt March had an attack of the fidgets, Meg was sensitive, Beth would look grieved and wistful when she got home, and Amy kept making remarks about people who were always talking about being good and yet wouldn't even try when other people set them a virtuous example. Little Women Don't say anything till Jo has got good-natured with Laurie, than take a quiet minute and just kiss her, or do some kind thing, and I'm sure she'll be friends again with all her heart.' Little Women 'My good mother used to help me...' Little Women I had a hard time, Jo, and shed a good many bitter tears over my failures, for in spite of my efforts I never seemed to get on. Little Women Then your father came, and I was so happy that I found it easy to be good. Little Women 'Oh, Mother, if I'm ever half as good as you, I shall be satisfied,' cried Jo, much touched. Little Women 'No, dear, but speaking of Father reminded me how much I miss him, how much I owe him, and how faithfully I should watch and work to keep his little daughters safe and good for him.' Little Women But she begged so hard, and Sallie had promised to take good care of her, and a little pleasure seemed so delightful after a winter of irksome work that the mother yielded, and the daughter went to take her first taste of fashionable life. Little Women She had not much time for repining, however, for the three young girls were busily employed in 'having a good time'. Little Women said Annie with a funny look, as Meg slipped the note into her pocket as a sort of talisman against envy, vanity, and false pride, for the few loving words had done her good, and the flowers cheered her up by their beauty. Little Women She may tear it tonight, and that will be a good excuse for offering a decent one.' Little Women Come, I'll be good. Little Women 'Just say I looked pretty well and was having a good time.' Little Women You don't look as if you were having a good time. Little Women Tomorrow I shall put away my 'fuss and feathers' and be desperately good again,' she answered with an affected little laugh. Little Women But he got no chance to deliver it, for Meg kept away from him till he came to say good night. Little Women And Jo laughed, as if on second thoughts the thing struck her as a good joke. Little Women I'll forget all the bad and remember only the good, for I did enjoy a great deal, and thank you very much for letting me go. Little Women Jo, your turn will come in time, perhaps, so listen to my 'plans' and help me carry them out, if they are good.' Little Women 'I want my daughters to be beautiful, accomplished, and good. Little Women To be loved and chosen by a good man is the best and sweetest thing which can happen to a woman, and I sincerely hope my girls may know this beautiful experience. Little Women cried both, with all their hearts, as she bade them good night. Little Women Pickwick, the president, read the paper, which was filled with original tales, poetry, local news, funny advertisements, and hints, in which they good-naturedly reminded each other of their faults and short comings. Little Women WEEKLY REPORT Meg--Good. Little Women Beth--Very Good. Little Women 'Good! Little Women 'Good! Little Women Good!' Little Women Jo regarded them as worthy of Bacon, Milton, or Shakespeare, and remodeled her own works with good effect, she thought. Little Women Her solitary breakfast did not taste good, and the room seemed lonely and untidy, for Jo had not filled the vases, Beth had not dusted, and Amy's books lay scattered about. Little Women Jo read till her eyes gave out and she was sick of books, got so fidgety that even good-natured Laurie had a quarrel with her, and so reduced in spirits that she desperately wished she had gone with Aunt March. Little Women Hoping to impress the lesson more deeply, Mrs. March, who had a good deal of humor, resolved to finish off the trial in an appropriate manner, so she gave Hannah a holiday and let the girls enjoy the full effect of the play system. Little Women 'Poor little souls, they will have a hard time, I'm afraid, but they won't suffer, and it will do them good,' she said, producing the more palatable viands with which she had provided herself, and disposing of the bad breakfast, so that their feelings might not be hurt, a motherly little deception for which they were grateful. Little Women Make the shroud, and lay him in my box, and after the dinner party, we'll have a nice little funeral,' said Jo, beginning to feel as if she had undertaken a good deal. Little Women The walk revived her spirits, and flattering herself that she had made good bargains, she trudged home again, after buying a very young lobster, some very old asparagus, and two boxes of acid strawberries. Little Women Fearing to ask any more advice, she did her best alone, and discovered that something more than energy and good will is necessary to make a cook. Little Women 'Then let me advise you to take up your little burdens again, for though they seem heavy sometimes, they are good for us, and lighten as we learn to carry them. Little Women It keeps us from ennui and mischief, is good for health and spirits, and gives us a sense of power and independence better than money or fashion.' Little Women 'Very good! Little Women Mother 'That does me good! Little Women Laying her head on her arms, Jo wet her little romance with a few happy tears, for she had thought that no one saw and appreciated her efforts to be good, and this assurance was doubly precious, doubly encouraging, because unexpected and from the person whose commendation she most valued. Little Women Feeling stronger than ever to meet and subdue her Apollyon, she pinned the note inside her frock, as a shield and a reminder, lest she be taken unaware, and proceeded to open her other letter, quite ready for either good or bad news. Little Women Don't bother about rations, I'll see to that and everything else, only do come, there's a good fellow! Little Women 'Scarlet and gray boating suit, good enough for me. Little Women 'That's my good girl. Little Women Sunshine and laughter were good omens for a pleasure party, and soon a lively bustle began in both houses. Little Women Amy found Grace a well-mannered, merry, little person, and after staring dumbly at one another for a few minutes, they suddenly became very good friends. Little Women He never talked to her much, but he looked at her a good deal, and she felt sure that he did not regard her with aversion. Little Women He was not very wise, but very good-natured, and altogether an excellent person to carry on a picnic. Little Women Jo was through the last wicket and had missed the stroke, which failure ruffled her a good deal. Little Women Laurie threw up his hat, then remembered that it wouldn't do to exult over the defeat of his guests, and stopped in the middle of the cheer to whisper to his friend, 'Good for you, Jo! Little Women Who can make good coffee?' Little Women 'I had an uncommonly good time that day, and haven't got over it yet. Little Women He traveled a long while, nearly eight-and-twenty years, and had a hard time of it, till he came to the palace of a good old king, who had offered a reward to anyone who could tame and train a fine but unbroken colt, of which he was very fond. Little Women 'It's a very good one for you,' retorted Jo in a low voice. Little Women 'Good! Little Women I don't like my work, but I get a good deal of satisfaction out of it after all, so I won't complain. Little Women She pities him, so she is good to him,' said Jo, beaming at her from the croquet ground. Little Women She meant 'facinating', but as Grace didn't know the exact meaning of either word, fastidious sounded well and made a good impression. Little Women On the lawn where it had gathered, the little party separated with cordial good nights and good-byes, for the Vaughns were going to Canada. Little Women thought Laurie, opening his sleepy eyes to take a good look, for there was something rather peculiar in the appearance of his neighbors. Little Women thought Laurie, peeping through the bushes, and looking wide-awake and good-natured already. Little Women 'There is a lovelier country even than that, where we shall go, by-and-by, when we are good enough,' answered Meg with her sweetest voice. Little Women If I arrive late, you'll say a good word for me, won't you, Beth?' Little Women For I wouldn't be idle, but do good, and make everyone love me dearly.' Little Women 'Why don't you say you'd have a splendid, wise, good husband and some angelic little children? Little Women Don't be dismal or fret, but do your duty and you'll get your reward, as good Mr. Brooke has, by being respected and loved.' Little Women asked Laurie, grateful for the good advice, but objecting to the lecture, and glad to turn the conversation from himself after his unusual outbreak. Little Women 'Only what your grandpa told us about him, how he took good care of his own mother till she died, and wouldn't go abroad as tutor to some nice person because he wouldn't leave her. Little Women And how he provides now for an old woman who nursed his mother, and never tells anyone, but is just as generous and patient and good as he can be.' Little Women If you have been good, he looks satisfied and walks briskly. Little Women So you keep an account of my good and bad marks in Brooke's face, do you? Little Women 'Yes, if you are good, and love your book, as the boys in the primer are told to do,' said Meg, smiling. Little Women I have billiards at home, but it's no fun unless you have good players, so, as I'm fond of it, I come sometimes and have a game with Ned Moffat or some of the other fellows.' Little Women Or there will be an end of all our good times.' Little Women 'It's very good,' said Amy critically. Little Women And he said it was good, and I shall write more, and he's going to get the next paid for, and I am so happy, for in time I may be able to support myself and help the girls.' Little Women It was good practice, he said, and when the beginners improved, anyone would pay. Little Women You're pretty enough and good enough already, so I'd have some rich relation leave you a fortune unexpectedly. Little Women 'Can't wait, and I'm afraid I haven't much faith in ink and dirt, though I'm grateful for your good intentions.' Little Women Poor Hannah was the first to recover, and with unconscious wisdom she set all the rest a good example, for with her, work was panacea for most afflictions. Little Women Hospital stores are not always good. Little Women Everything was arranged by the time Laurie returned with a note from Aunt March, enclosing the desired sum, and a few lines repeating what she had often said before, that she had always told them it was absurd for March to go into the army, always predicted that no good would come of it, and she hoped they would take her advice the next time. Little Women It will be good for my vanity, I was getting too proud of my wig. Little Women It will do my brains good to have that mop taken off. Little Women Good night, my darlings,' said Mrs. March, as the hymn ended, for no one cared to try another. Little Women Hannah is faithfulness itself, and our good neighbor will guard you as if you were his own. Little Women 'Good-by, my darlings! Little Women As she rolled away, the sun came out, and looking back, she saw it shining on the group at the gate like a good omen. Little Women And so the journey began with the good omens of sunshine, smiles, and cheerful words. Little Women News from their father comforted the girls very much, for though dangerously ill, the presence of the best and tenderest of nurses had already done him good. Little Women My dearest Mother: It is impossible to tell you how happy your last letter made us, for the news was so good we couldn't help laughing and crying over it. Little Women The girls are all as good as gold. Little Women I rushed up garret when the letter came, and tried to thank god for being so good to us, but I could only cry, and say, 'I'm glad! Little Women We have such funny times, and now I can enjoy them, for everyone is so desperately good, it's like living in a nest of turtledoves. Little Women We both laughed, begged each other's pardon, and felt all good and comfortable again. Little Women I read every morning, try to be good all day, and sing myself to sleep with Father's tune. Little Women Meg is a great comfort to me and lets me have jelly every night at tea its so good for me Jo says because it keeps me sweet tempered. Little Women Miss Meg is going to make a proper good housekeeper. Little Women A salute of twenty-four guns was fired on receipt of good news from Washington, and a dress parade took place at headquarters. Little Women They did not forget their motto, but hoping and keeping busy seemed to grow easier, and after such tremendous exertions, they felt that Endeavor deserved a holiday, and gave it a good many. Little Women 'Ask Hannah for some nice little mess, and take it round, Beth, the air will do you good,' said Jo, adding apologetically, 'I'd go but I want to finish my writing.' Little Women The good soul was wide awake in a minute, and took the lead at once, assuring that there was no need to worry; every one had scarlet fever, and if rightly treated, nobody died, all of which Jo believed, and felt much relieved as they went up to call Meg. Little Women 'Good girl! Little Women 'I follow the good example my neighbors set me,' was Laurie's answer, as he swung himself out of the room. Little Women The girls knew nothing about illness, and Mr. Laurence was not allowed to see her, so Hannah had everything her own way, and busy Dr. Bangs did his best, but left a good deal to the excellent nurse. Little Women The milkman, baker, grocer, and butcher inquired how she did, poor Mrs. Hummel came to beg pardon for her thoughtlessness and to get a shroud for Minna, the neighbors sent all sorts of comforts and good wishes, and even those who knew her best were surprised to find how many friends shy little Beth had made. Little Women 'Good for you, Jo! Little Women She's so good, and we all love her so much, I don't believe God will take her away yet.' Little Women 'The good and dear people always do die,' groaned Jo, but she stopped crying, for her friend's words cheered her up in spite of her own doubts and fears. Little Women You are a good doctor, Teddy, and such a comfortable friend. Little Women 'That's the interferingest chap I ever see, but I forgive him and do hope Mrs. March is coming right away,' said Hannah, with an air of relief, when Jo told the good news. Little Women Leaning low over this dearest of her sisters, she kissed the damp forehead with her heart on her lips, and softly whispered, 'Good-by, my Beth. Little Women Good-by!' Little Women To me it is a rosary, and as such I should use it like a good catholic,' said Esther, eyeing the handsome thing wistfully. Little Women 'Is it meant to use as you use the string of good-smelling wooden beads hanging over your glass?' Little Women 'If Mademoiselle was a Catholic, she would find true comfort, but as that is not to be, it would be well if you went apart each day to meditate and pray, as did the good mistress whom I served before Madame. Little Women Say nothing to Madame, but when she sleeps go you and sit alone a while to think good thoughts, and pray the dear God preserve your sister.' Little Women Amy liked the idea, and gave her leave to arrange the light closet next her room, hoping it would do her good. Little Women The first one who is affianced will have the pearls, Madame has said it, and I have a fancy that the little turquoise ring will be given to you when you go, for Madame approves your good behavior and charming manners.' Little Women On the table she laid her little testament and hymnbook, kept a vase always full of the best flowers Laurie brought her, and came every day to 'sit alone' thinking good thoughts, and praying the dear God to preserve her sister. Little Women In her first effort at being very, very good, she decided to make her will, as Aunt March had done, so that if she did fall ill and die, her possessions might be justly and generously divided. Little Women During one of her play hours she wrote out the important document as well as she could, with some help from Esther as to certain legal terms, and when the good-natured Frenchwoman had signed her name, Amy felt relieved and laid it by to show Laurie, whom she wanted as a second witness. Little Women Amy came out so strong on this occasion that I think the good thoughts in the little chapel really began to bear fruit. Little Women Even Polly seemed impressed, for he called her a good girl, blessed her buttons, and begged her to 'come and take a walk, dear', in his most affable tone. Little Women There probably were a good many happy little girls in and about the city that day, but it is my private opinion that Amy was the happiest of all, when she sat in her mother's lap and told her trials, receiving consolation and compensation in the shape of approving smiles and fond caresses. Little Women There are a good many hard times in this life of ours, but we can always bear them if we ask help in the right way. Little Women The woman's face is not good, it's too beautiful for me to draw, but the baby is done better, and I love it very much. Little Women I think you will prosper, for the sincere wish to be good is half the battle. Little Women He's been good to Father, and you won't send him away, but let Meg marry him, if she wants to. Little Women Meg will be absorbed and no good to me any more. Little Women 'Money is a good and useful thing, Jo, and I hope my girls will never feel the need of it too bitterly, nor be tempted by too much. Little Women I should like to know that John was firmly established in some good business, which gave him an income large enough to keep free from debt and make Meg comfortable. Little Women If rank and money come with love and virtue, also, I should accept them gratefully, and enjoy your good fortune, but I know, by experience, how much genuine happiness can be had in a plain little house, where the daily bread is earned, and some privations give sweetness to the few pleasures. Little Women I am content to see Meg begin humbly, for if I am not mistaken, she will be rich in the possession of a good man's heart, and that is better than a fortune.' Little Women Then he's rich and generous and good, and loves us all, and I say it's a pity my plan is spoiled.' Little Women Good night, Mother, dear. Little Women Mr. Laurence will help me to some good place, and then, my sweet girl, you will make me happy. Little Women It will do you good, and no harm, as you go to your father.' Little Women What torments they are, yet we can't do without them,' he said, pinching her cheeks good-humoredly. Little Women Finding the door locked again, she left the note to do its work, and was going quietly away, when the young gentleman slid down the banisters, and waited for her at the bottom, saying, with his most virtuous expression of countenance, 'What a good fellow you are, Jo! Little Women She never alluded to a certain person, but she thought of him a good deal, dreamed dreams more than ever, and once Jo, rummaging her sister's desk for stamps, found a bit of paper scribbled over with the words, 'Mrs. Little Women They drank healths, told stories, sang songs, 'reminisced', as the old folks say, and had a thoroughly good time. Little Women A burnt offering has been made to vanity, this hardened palm has earned something better than blisters, and I'm sure the sewing done by these pricked fingers will last a long time, so much good will went into the stitches. Little Women I'm proud to shake this good, industrious little hand, and hope I shall not soon be asked to give it away.' Little Women Please say something nice, for she has tried so hard and been so very, very good to me,' said Beth in her father's ear. Little Women I don't know whether the shearing sobered our black sheep, but I do know that in all Washington I couldn't find anything beautiful enough to be bought with the five-and-twenty dollars my good girl sent me.' Little Women 'I observed that Amy took drumsticks at dinner, ran errands for her mother all the afternoon, gave Meg her place tonight, and has waited on every one with patience and good humor. Little Women 'If he did speak, you wouldn't know what to say, but would cry or blush, or let him have his own way, instead of giving a good, decided no.' Little Women 'Good afternoon. Little Women John is good and wise, he's got heaps of talent, he's willing to work and sure to get on, he's so energetic and brave. Little Women I'll go and hear the fun, and have a good laugh over it.' Little Women But Jo was mistaken, for Laurie came prancing in, overflowing with good spirits, bearing a great bridal-looking bouquet for 'Mrs. Little Women I take it as a good omen for the future and invite you to my wedding on the spot,' answered Mr. Brooke, who felt at peace with all mankind, even his mischievous pupil. Little Women I'm not good for much, I know, but I'll stand by you, Jo, all the days of my life. Little Women 'Well, now, don't be dismal, there's a good fellow. Little Women With the good sense and sturdy independence that characterized him, he refused Mr. Laurence's more generous offers, and accepted the place of bookkeeper, feeling better satisfied to begin with an honestly earned salary than by running any risks with borrowed money. Little Women But once get used to these slight blemishes and nothing could be more complete, for good sense and good taste had presided over the furnishing, and the result was highly satisfactory. Little Women I don't think the Parian Psyche Laurie gave lost any of its beauty because John put up the bracket it stood upon, that any upholsterer could have draped the plain muslin curtains more gracefully than Amy's artistic hand, or that any store-room was ever better provided with good wishes, merry words, and happy hopes than that in which Jo and her mother put away Meg's few boxes, barrels, and bundles, and I am morally certain that the spandy new kitchen never could have looked so cozy and neat if Hannah had not arranged every pot and pan a dozen times over, and laid the fire all ready for lighting the minute 'Mis. Little Women 'Don't lecture any more, there's a good soul! Little Women As the younger girls stand together, giving the last touches to their simple toilet, it may be a good time to tell of a few changes which three years have wrought in their appearance, for all are looking their best just now. Little Women 'He has promised to be very good today, and he can be perfectly elegant if he likes,' returned Amy, and gliding away to warn Hercules to beware of the dragon, which warning caused him to haunt the old lady with a devotion that nearly distracted her. Little Women Meg knew that if he gave the promise he would keep it at all costs, and feeling her power, used it as a woman may for her friend's good. Little Women When she came down, looking like a pretty Quakeress in her dove-colored suit and straw bonnet tied with white, they all gathered about her to say 'good-by', as tenderly as if she had been going to make the grand tour. Little Women Good-by, good-by!' Little Women Softened into crayon sketches, they did better, for the likenesses were good, and Amy's hair, Jo's nose, Meg's mouth, and Laurie's eyes were pronounced 'wonderfully fine'. Little Women Everybody liked her, for among her good gifts was tact. Little Women You don't care to make people like you, to go into good society, and cultivate your manners and tastes. Little Women Amy's definition of Jo's idea of independence was such a good hit that both burst out laughing, and the discussion took a more amiable turn. Little Women So busy was she with her card full of refractory figures that she did not observe a newcomer, who entered without stopping the vehicle, till a masculine voice said, 'Good morning, Miss March,' and, looking up, she beheld one of Laurie's most elegant college friends. Little Women It looks hospitable, and I want the poor child to have a good time after all her trouble,' said Mrs. March, suiting the action to the word. Little Women CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN LITERARY LESSONS Fortune suddenly smiled upon Jo, and dropped a good luck penny in her path. Little Women Pausing to turn a page, the lad saw her looking and, with boyish good nature offered half his paper, saying bluntly, 'want to read it? Little Women She makes a good living out of such stories, they say.' Little Women 'Do you say she makes a good living out of stories like this?' Little Women Of course there was a great jubilee, and when the story came everyone read and praised it, though after her father had told her that the language was good, the romance fresh and hearty, and the tragedy quite thrilling, he shook his head, and said in his unworldly way... Little Women Fame is a very good thing to have in the house, but cash is more convenient, so I wish to take the sense of the meeting on this important subject,' said Jo, calling a family council. Little Women I've been fussing over the thing so long, I really don't know whether it's good, bad, or indifferent. Little Women Make a good, popular book, and get as much money as you can. Little Women But it did her good, for those whose opinion had real value gave her the criticism which is an author's best education, and when the first soreness was over, she could laugh at her poor little book, yet believe in it still, and feel herself the wiser and stronger for the buffeting she had received. Little Women There shall be no flurry, no scolding, no discomfort, but a neat house, a cheerful wife, and a good dinner. Little Women 'It's a scrape, I acknowledge, but if you will lend a hand, we'll pull through and have a good time yet. Little Women He meant it to be a good-natured joke, but that one word sealed his fate. Little Women He had carried it off as a good joke with Scott, excused his little wife as well as he could, and played the host so hospitably that his friend enjoyed the impromptu dinner, and promised to come again, but John was angry, though he did not show it, he felt that Meg had deserted him in his hour of need. Little Women 'John is a good man, but he has his faults, and you must learn to see and bear with them, remembering your own. Little Women He is very accurate, and particular about the truth--a good trait, though you call him 'fussy'. Little Women I'm rather proud of my wife's feet, and don't mind if she does pay eight or nine dollars for her boots, if they are good ones.' Little Women 'Twenty-five yards of silk seems a good deal to cover one small woman, but I've no doubt my wife will look as fine as Ned Moffat's when she gets it on,' said John dryly. Little Women The good-natured Mrs. Moffat willingly did so, and had the delicacy not to make her a present of it immediately afterward. Little Women That's the boy, see him kick, he hits out with his fists like a good one. Little Women 'I've done a good many rash and foolish things in my life, but I don't think I ever was mad enough to say I'd make six calls in one day, when a single one upsets me for a week.' Little Women Now put on all your best things, and I'll tell you how to behave at each place, so that you will make a good impression. Little Women They move in the best society, are valuable persons for us to know, and I wouldn't fail to make a good impression there for anything.' Little Women 'Yes, Amy was in despair that day, for all the good beasts were gone, and of three left, one was lame, one blind, and the other so balky that you had to put dirt in his mouth before he would start. Little Women Good-by, dear, do come and see us. Little Women Tommy is poor and bashful and good and very clever. Little Women 'What a good girl you are, Amy!' Little Women Preaching does not do any good, as I know to my sorrow, since I've had Teddie to manage. Little Women Jo was not in a good humor, and the perverse fit returned, but Amy, who had virtuously done her duty, kept her temper and pleased everybody, was in a most angelic frame of mind. Little Women 'Good girl! Little Women Amy was asked, but Jo was not, which was fortunate for all parties, as her elbows were decidedly akimbo at this period of her life, and it took a good many hard knocks to teach her how to get on easily. Little Women I think it very appropriate to you, and feel very grateful for your efforts to make it so pretty, but we must give up our private wishes, of course, and I will see that you have a good place elsewhere. Little Women Framed in a brilliant scrollwork of scarlet, blue and gold, with little spirits of good will helping one another up and down among the thorns and flowers, were the words, 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' Little Women Even a fair table may become a pulpit, if it can offer the good and helpful words which are never out of season. Little Women Teddy and his boys will lend a hand, and we'll have a good time yet.' Little Women 'Good evening, Miss Jo. Little Women Much gratified, Jo rushed back to tell the good news, and Amy looked both touched and surprised by the report of May's word and manner. Little Women It would do me so much good, and be so altogether splendid. Little Women Amy is more docile, will make a good companion for Flo, and receive gratefully any help the trip may give her.' Little Women By the time Amy came in, Jo was able to take her part in the family jubilation, not quite as heartily as usual, perhaps, but without repinings at Amy's good fortune. Little Women I wish Beth could have come, it would have done her so much good. Little Women It was as good as Punch, for there were fat dowagers rolling about in their red and yellow coaches, with gorgeous Jeameses in silk stockings and velvet coats, up behind, and powdered coachmen in front. Little Women They went to the theater with us, and we did have such a good time, for Frank devoted himself to Flo, and Fred and I talked over past, present, and future fun as if we had known each other all our days. Little Women Aunt's pronunciation is old-fashioned, and Flo and I, though we flattered ourselves that we knew a good deal, find we don't, and are very grateful to have Fred do the '_parley vooing_', as Uncle calls it. Little Women It is good practice for me, and with my sketchbook will give you a better idea of my tour than these scribbles. Little Women So he was going at once on the night train and only had time to say good-by. Little Women I didn't promise, but I looked at him, and he seemed satisfied, and there was no time for anything but messages and good-byes, for he was off in an hour, and we all miss him very much. Little Women I wish I could see you for a good talk, Marmee. Little Women 'She sits alone a good deal, and doesn't talk to her father as much as she used. Little Women So you needn't write touching notes and smile in that insinuating way, for it won't do a bit of good, and I won't have it.' Little Women You're not half good enough for--well, whoever the modest girl may be.' Little Women Amy is my chief care now, but her good sense will help her. Little Women Be very good to him, won't you?' Little Women When Laurie said good-by, he whispered significantly, 'It won't do a bit of good, Jo. Little Women Soon the sun came out, and taking it as a good omen, I cleared up likewise and enjoyed my journey with all my heart. Little Women Wasn't it good of him? Little Women Mrs. K. told me he was from Berlin, very learned and good, but poor as a church mouse, and gives lessons to support himself and two little orphan nephews whom he is educating here, according to the wishes of his sister, who married an American. Little Women Some good angel inspired me to try gymnastics, and I kept it up till they were glad to sit down and keep still. Little Women Professor Bhaer was there, and while he arranged his books, I took a good look at him. Little Women A regular German--rather stout, with brown hair tumbled all over his head, a bushy beard, good nose, the kindest eyes I ever saw, and a splendid big voice that does one's ears good, after our sharp or slipshod American gabble. Little Women I felt angry at first, and then I didn't care, for a governess is as good as a clerk, and I've got sense, if I haven't style, which is more than some people have, judging from the remarks of the elegant beings who clattered away, smoking like bad chimneys. Little Women But he enjoys it like a boy, Mrs. Kirke says, and takes it so good-naturedly that they all like him in spite of his foreign ways. Little Women She has fine books and pictures, knows interesting persons, and seems friendly, so I shall make myself agreeable, for I do want to get into good society, only it isn't the same sort that Amy likes. Little Women I promised I would, and he departed, but it seems as if I was doomed to see a good deal of him, for today as I passed his door on my way out, by accident I knocked against it with my umbrella. Little Women Take good care of him for me, Beth, and tell me all about the babies, and give heaps of love to everyone. Little Women We are very good friends now, and I've begun to take lessons. Little Women laughed good-natured Mrs. K., as she put the relics in the rag bay. Little Women Come, a little lesson then and now, or--no more good fairy works for me and mine.' Little Women And away he went, rumbling out the words with his strong voice and a relish which was good to see as well as hear. Little Women I like it very much, and he doesn't seem tired of it yet, which is very good of him, isn't it? Little Women Just then she was both, for it was perfectly evident from the knowing glances exchanged among the gentlemen that her little fiction of 'my friend' was considered a good joke, and a laugh, produced by some inaudible remark of the editor, as he closed the door, completed her discomfiture. Little Women 'Yes, it's a new plot, and pretty well worked up--language good, and so on,' was Mr. Dashwood's affable reply. Little Women 'Very well, you can have it,' said Jo, handing back the story with a satisfied air, for after the dollar-a-column work, even twenty-five seemed good pay. Little Women Good morning, Sir.' Little Women She studied faces in the street, and characters, good, bad, and indifferent, all about her. Little Women She delved in the dust of ancient times for facts or fictions so old that they were as good as new, and introduced herself to folly, sin, and misery, as well as her limited opportunities allowed. Little Women Mr. Bhaer, in one of their conversations, had advised her to study simple, true, and lovely characters, wherever she found them, as good training for a writer. Little Women said Jo to herself, when she at length discovered that genuine good will toward one's fellow men could beautify and dignify even a stout German teacher, who shoveled in his dinner, darned his own socks, and was burdened with the name of Bhaer. Little Women She began to see that character is a better possession than money, rank, intellect, or beauty, and to feel that if greatness is what a wise man has defined it to be, 'truth, reverence, and good will', then her friend Friedrich Bhaer was not only good, but great. Little Women She had betrayed herself, however, by a look and a blush, for though an absent man, the Professor saw a good deal more than people fancied. Little Women I do not think that good young girls should see such things. Little Women I'll be very good and proper now.' Little Women But much as she liked to write for children, Jo could not consent to depict all her naughty boys as being eaten by bears or tossed by mad bulls because they did not go to a particular Sabbath school, nor all the good infants who did go as rewarded by every kind of bliss, from gilded gingerbread to escorts of angels when they departed this life with psalms or sermons on their lisping tongues. Little Women Which decision proved that her second tumble down the beanstalk had done her some good. Little Women To rescue the conversation from one of the wells of silence into which it kept falling, Jo said hastily, 'Now you must have a good long holiday!' Little Women 'I've loved you ever since I've known you, Jo, couldn't help it, you've been so good to me. Little Women I only loved you all the more, and I worked hard to please you, and I gave up billiards and everything you didn't like, and waited and never complained, for I hoped you'd love me, though I'm not half good enough...' Little Women 'You, you are, you're a great deal too good for me, and I'm so grateful to you, and so proud and fond of you, I don't know why I can't love you as you want me to. Little Women 'Oh, Teddy, I'm sorry, so desperately sorry, I could kill myself if it would do any good! Little Women He isn't old, nor anything bad, but good and kind, and the best friend I've got, next to you. Little Women We don't agree and we never shall, so we'll be good friends all our lives, but we won't go and do anything rash.' Little Women There was a little quiver in Jo's voice, and thinking it a good omen, Laurie turned round, bringing all his persuasive powers to bear as he said, in the wheedlesome tone that had never been so dangerously wheedlesome before, 'Don't disappoint us, dear! Little Women 'That will do him good, and he'll come home in such a tender, penitent state of mind, that I shan't dare to see him,' she said, adding, as she went slowly home, feeling as if she had murdered some innocent thing, and buried it under the leaves. Little Women It will do me good, and my old bones won't suffer, for traveling nowadays is almost as easy as sitting in a chair.' Little Women 'Good,' thought the old gentleman. Little Women 'I've known it for a good while, dear, and now I'm used to it, it isn't hard to think of or to bear. Little Women He is so good to me, how can I help It? Little Women She's so ambitious, but her heart is good and tender, and no matter how high she flies, she never will forget home. Little Women It won't do any good. Little Women 'That mademoiselle has made good use of her time, and the result is charming,' replied Laurie, bowing with his hand on his heart and an admiring look. Little Women said Amy, feeling in good spirits and anxious to see him so also. Little Women 'Take a good look at it for her sake, and then come and tell me what you have been doing with yourself all this while,' said Amy, seating herself, ready for a good talk. Little Women Amy knew her good points, and made the most of them with the taste and skill which is a fortune to a poor and pretty woman. Little Women She walked up and down the long saloon while waiting for Laurie, and once arranged herself under the chandelier, which had a good effect upon her hair, then she thought better of it, and went away to the other end of the room, as if ashamed of the girlish desire to have the first view a propitious one. Little Women 'Good evening, Diana!' Little Women 'Good evening, Apollo!' Little Women She did pity the Davis girls, who were awkward, plain, and destitute of escort, except a grim papa and three grimmer maiden aunts, and she bowed to them in her friendliest manner as she passed, which was good of her, as it permitted them to see her dress, and burn with curiosity to know who her distinguished-looking friend might be. Little Women He dances devinely, but he will excuse me, as you are an old friend,' said Amy, hoping that the name would have a good effect, and show Laurie that she was not to be trifled with. Little Women Her anger had a good effect, however, for she hid it under a smiling face, and seemed unusually blithe and brilliant. Little Women Laurie had a waked-up look as he rose to give her his seat, and when he hurried away to bring her some supper, she said to herself, with a satisfied smile, 'Ah, I thought that would do him good!' Little Women 'Good name for it. Little Women Amy rather regretted that last sentence, fearing it wasn't in good taste, but Laurie liked her better for it, and found himself both admiring and respecting the brave patience that made the most of opportunity, and the cheerful spirit that covered poverty with flowers. Little Women Meg rather approved of the new arrangement at first, and found it a relief to know that John was having a good time instead of dozing in the parlor, or tramping about the house and waking the children. Little Women Now, dear, good-by. Little Women Think over Mother's preachment, act upon it if it seems good, and God bless you all.' Little Women Meg did think it over, found it good, and acted upon it, though the first attempt was not made exactly as she planned to have it. Little Women So poor Meg sang and rocked, told stories and tried every sleep-prevoking wile she could devise, but all in vain, the big eyes wouldn't shut, and long after Daisy had gone to byelow, like the chubby little bunch of good nature she was, naughty Demi lay staring at the light, with the most discouragingly wide-awake expression of countenance. Little Women 'Will Demi lie still like a good boy, while Mamma runs down and gives poor Papa his tea?' Little Women 'Let me stay with him, he'll be good now, John.' Little Women Demi, say good night to Mamma, and let her go and rest, for she is very tired with taking care of you all day.' Little Women You have been shut up so long, it will do you no end of good, and I shall enjoy it, of all things. Little Women 'It is always so quiet and pleasant here, it does me good, Meg,' she used to say, looking about her with wistful eyes, as if trying to discover the charm, that she might use it in her great house, full of splendid loneliness, for there were no riotous, sunny-faced babies there, and Ned lived in a world of his own, where there was no place for her. Little Women This is the sort of shelf on which young wives and mothers may consent to be laid, safe from the restless fret and fever of the world, finding loyal lovers in the little sons and daughters who cling to them, undaunted by sorrow, poverty, or age, walking side by side, through fair and stormy weather, with a faithful friend, who is, in the true sense of the good old Saxon word, the 'house-band', and learning, as Meg learned, that a woman's happiest kingdom is home, her highest honor the art of ruling it not as a queen, but as a wise wife and mother. Little Women 'It's good advice, you'd better take it and save your fingers,' she said, thinking her speech amused him. Little Women It was a characteristic speech, and sounded daring, but audacity becomes young people, and Amy's ambition had a good foundation. Little Women 'Good! Little Women He's a good fellow, Amy, but not the man I fancied you'd like.' Little Women Queens of society can't get on without money, so you mean to make a good match, and start in that way? Little Women Your indifference is half affectation, and a good stirring up would prove it.' Little Women 'Because, with every chance for being good, useful, and happy, you are faulty, lazy, and miserable.' Little Women You men tell us we are angels, and say we can make you what we will, but the instant we honestly try to do you good, you laugh at us and won't listen, which proves how much your flattery is worth.' Little Women In a minute a hand came down over the page, so that she could not draw, and Laurie's voice said, with a droll imitation of a penitent child, 'I will be good, oh, I will be good!' Little Women 'She was kind, but not in the right way, and it's lucky for her she didn't love me, if I'm the good-for-nothing fellow you think me. Little Women 'No, you didn't, and you'll say so in the end, for it did you good, and proved that you could do something if you tried. Little Women Love Jo all your days, if you choose, but don't let it spoil you, for it's wicked to throw away so many good gifts because you can't have the one you want. Little Women Well, if it does him good, I'm glad, if it makes him hate me, I'm sorry, but it's true, and I can't take back a word of it.' Little Women 'No, be yourself with me, Laurie, and part in the good old way. Little Women Yours gratefully, Telemachus 'Good boy! Little Women I'm not so good as you make me, but I have tried to do right. Little Women CHAPTER FORTY-ONE LEARNING TO FORGET Amy's lecture did Laurie good, though, of course, he did not own it till long afterward. Little Women The poor fellow had temptations enough from without and from within, but he withstood them pretty well, for much as he valued liberty, he valued good faith and confidence more, so his promise to his grandfather, and his desire to be able to look honestly into the eyes of the women who loved him, and say 'All's well,' kept him safe and steady. Little Women Women work a good many miracles, and I have a persuasion that they may perform even that of raising the standard of manhood by refusing to echo such sayings. Little Women But mothers, sisters, and friends may help to make the crop a small one, and keep many tares from spoiling the harvest, by believing, and showing that they believe, in the possibility of loyalty to the virtues which make men manliest in good women's eyes. Little Women There was only a comfortable glow that warmed and did him good without putting him into a fever, and he was reluctantly obliged to confess that the boyish passion was slowly subsiding into a more tranquil sentiment, very tender, a little sad and resentful still, but that was sure to pass away in time, leaving a brotherly affection which would last unbroken to the end. Little Women The words, 'Fred is a good fellow, but not at all the man I fancied you would ever like,' and Laurie's face when he uttered them, kept returning to her as pertinaciously as her own did when she said in look, if not in words, 'I shall marry for money.' Little Women But she certainly did grow a little pale and pensive that spring, lost much of her relish for society, and went out sketching alone a good deal. Little Women In a minute Amy went back to her place, and while she dried her tears, Laurie gathered up the scattered papers, finding in the sight of sundry well-worn letters and suggestive sketches good omens for the future. Little Women He longed to lay Amy's head down on his shoulder, and tell her to have a good cry, but he did not dare, so took her hand instead, and gave it a sympathetic squeeze that was better than words. Little Women With praiseworthy discretion, the good lady said nothing, and betrayed no sign of enlightenment, but cordially urged Laurie to stay and begged Amy to enjoy his society, for it would do her more good than so much solitude. Little Women Amy was a model of docility, and as her aunt was a good deal occupied with Flo, she was left to entertain her friend, and did it with more than her usual success. Little Women The invigorating air did them both good, and much exercise worked wholesome changes in minds as well as bodies. Little Women It will do me good, for since you came I have been altogether lazy and luxurious.' Little Women It was not fair, for she tried more than Amy to be good, but never got any reward, only disappointment, trouble and hard work. Little Women But someone did come and help her, though Jo did not recognize her good angels at once because they wore familiar shapes and used the simple spells best fitted to poor humanity. Little Women When aching heart was a little comforted, troubled mind likewise found help, for one day she went to the study, and leaning over the good gray head lifted to welcome her with a tranquil smile, she said very humbly, 'Father, talk to me as you did to Beth. Little Women As they sat sewing together, Jo discovered how much improved her sister Meg was, how well she could talk, how much she knew about good, womanly impulses, thoughts, and feelings, how happy she was in husband and children, and how much they were all doing for each other. Little Women 'Frost opens chestnut burrs, ma'am, and it takes a good shake to bring them down. Little Women It's highly virtuous to say we'll be good, but we can't do it all at once, and it takes a long pull, a strong pull, and a pull all together before some of us even get our feet set in the right way. Little Women Now, if she had been the heroine of a moral storybook, she ought at this period of her life to have become quite saintly, renounced the world, and gone about doing good in a mortified bonnet, with tracts in her pocket. Little Women I'm sure it would do you good, and please us very much.' Little Women 'If there is anything good or true in what I write, it isn't mine. Little Women So taught by love and sorrow, Jo wrote her little stories, and sent them away to make friends for themselves and her, finding it a very charitable world to such humble wanderers, for they were kindly welcomed, and sent home comfortable tokens to their mother, like dutiful children whom good fortune overtakes. Little Women I never knew how good and generous and tender he was till now, for he lets me read his heart, and I find it full of noble impulses and hopes and purposes, and am so proud to know it's mine. Little Women So kind, so good, so patient with me always, my dear old Fritz. Little Women There was a good deal to show, and by-and-by she saw, and was grateful for it. Little Women Just recollect the good aunts who have not only lectured and fussed, but nursed and petted, too often without thanks, the scrapes they have helped you out of, the tips they have given you from their small store, the stitches the patient old fingers have set for you, the steps the willing old feet have taken, and gratefully pay the dear old ladies the little attentions that women love to receive as long as they live. Little Women Jo must have fallen asleep (as I dare say my reader has during this little homily), for suddenly Laurie's ghost seemed to stand before her, a substantial, lifelike ghost, leaning over her with the very look he used to wear when he felt a good deal and didn't like to show it. Little Women 'How good it sounds to hear you say 'Teddy'! Little Women answered Jo, smiling all over her face, so infectiously that they had another laugh, and then settled down for a good talk, quite in the pleasant old fashion. Little Women 'It was hard work, but between us, we talked her over, for we had heaps of good reasons on our side. Little Women I am lonely, sometimes, but I dare say it's good for me, and...' Little Women It was good to see Laurie square his shoulders, and smile with masculine scorn at that insinuation, as he replied, with his 'high and mighty' air, 'Amy is too well-bred for that, and I am not the sort of man to submit to it. Little Women I'll tell you all about it sometime, she never will, because after telling me that she despised and was ashamed of me, she lost her heart to the despicable party and married the good-for-nothing.' Little Women It was good to see him beam at 'my children', as he called the young pair. Little Women 'She has had a good example before her all her life, my dear,' Mr. March whispered back, with a loving look at the worn face and gray head beside him. Little Women Teddy thinks nothing too good for her,' returned Jo with infinite satisfaction. Little Women 'We must have our sing, in the good old way, for we are all together again once more,' said Jo, feeling that a good shout would be a safe and pleasant vent for the jubilant emotions of her soul. Little Women 'I know he is a good one,' added Mrs. March, with decided approval, as she wound up the clock. Little Women If she had seen his face when, safe in his own room, he looked at the picture of a severe and rigid young lady, with a good deal of hair, who appeared to be gazing darkly into futurity, it might have thrown some light upon the subject, especially when he turned off the gas, and kissed the picture in the dark. Little Women Come away, Impertinence, and don't shock my family by calling me names before their faces,' answered Amy, resolving that there should be a home with a good wife in it before she set up a salon as a queen of society. Little Women 'Well, my love, I consider him a trump, in the fullest sense of that expressive word, but I do wish he was a little younger and a good deal richer.' Little Women That accounts, perhaps, for your marrying a good-for-nothing like me.' Little Women We won't interfere now, but watch our chance, and do them a good turn in spite of themselves. Little Women 'Ah, we'll do quantities of good, won't we? Little Women But I was going to say that while I was dawdling about abroad, I saw a good many talented young fellows making all sorts of sacrifices, and enduring real hardships, that they might realize their dreams. Little Women Splendid fellows, some of them, working like heros, poor and friendless, but so full of courage, patience, and ambition that I was ashamed of myself, and longed to give them a right good lift. Little Women We'll have a good time ourselves, and add an extra relish to our own pleasure by giving other people a generous taste. Little Women Will you be a little Dorcas, going about emptying a big basket of comforts, and filling it up with good deeds?' Little Women 'Now you have been good children, and I'll play anything you like,' says Meg, as she leads her assistant cooks upstairs, when the pudding is safely bouncing in the pot. Little Women Down went the black legs and up came the gray head, as the preceptor said, with undisturbed dignity, 'Good evening, Mr. Bhaer. Excuse me for a moment. Little Women I quite long to see the dear man,' added Mrs. March. Jo heard that, but made no answer, except to kiss her mother, and walk rapidly away, thinking with a glow of gratitude, in spite of her heartache, 'How good she is to me! Little Women On learning his good fortune she almost clapped her hands. Little Women 'Ach, mein Gott, that is so good!' Little Women 'Good! Little Women 'It's very bad poetry, but I felt it when I wrote it, one day when I was very lonely, and had a good cry on a rag bag. Little Women I want to open a school for little lads--a good, happy, homelike school, with me to take care of them and Fritz to teach them.' Little Women But now, thanks to my good old aunt, who loved me better than I ever deserved, I'm rich, at least I feel so, and we can live at Plumfield perfectly well, if we have a flourishing school. Little Women But you are not merely a businessman, you love good and beautiful things, enjoy them yourself, and let others go halves, as you always did in the old times. Little Women 'And I've succeeded beyond my hopes, for here you are, a steady, sensible businessman, doing heaps of good with your money, and laying up the blessings of the poor, instead of dollars. Little Women But her faith in the good spot which exists in the heart of the naughtiest, sauciest, most tantalizing little ragamuffin gave her patience, skill, and in time success, for no mortal boy could hold out long with Father Bhaer shining on him as benevolently as the sun, and Mother Bhaer forgiving him seventy times seven. Little Women A toast heartily given by the good man, who never forgot how much he owed her, and quietly drunk by the boys, who had been taught to keep her memory green. Little Women It does my heart good to see them forget business and frolic for a day,' answered Jo, who now spoke in a maternal way of all mankind. Little Women I haven't given up the hope that I may write a good book yet, but I can wait, and I'm sure it will be all the better for such experiences and illustrations as these,' and Jo pointed from the lively lads in the distance to her father, leaning on the Professor's arm, as they walked to and fro in the sunshine, deep in one of the conversations which both enjoyed so much, and then to her mother, sitting enthroned among her daughters, with their children in her lap and at her feet, as if all found help and happiness in the face which never could grow old to them. Little Women Laurie was growing more serious, strong, and firm, and both were learning that beauty, youth, good fortune, even love itself, cannot keep care and pain, loss and sorrow, from the most blessed for ... Little Women So, in spite of my one cross, I can say with Meg, 'Thank God, I'm a happy woman.'' 'There's no need for me to say it, for everyone can see that I'm far happier than I deserve,' added Jo, glancing from her good husband to her chubby children, tumbling on the grass beside her. Little Women 'Yes, Jo, I think your harvest will be a good one,' began Mrs. March, frightening away a big black cricket that was staring Teddy out of countenance. Little Women 'Not half so good as yours, Mother. Little Women The dry-goods stores were not down among the counting-houses, banks, and wholesale warerooms, where gentlemen most do congregate, but Jo found herself in that part of the city before she did a single errand, loitering along as if waiting for someone, examining engineering instruments in one window and samples of wool in another, with most unfeminine interest, tumbling over barrels, being half-smothered by descending bales, and hustled unceremoniously by busy men who looked as if they wondered 'how the deuce she got there'. Lyrical and Critical Essays But that involves the risk of abolishing the very problem of methodology, for there would no longer be good and bad methods but good and bad minds. Lyrical and Critical Essays Like him, I have a good deal of affection for the first Christian. Lyrical and Critical Essays Thus we lived on sensations, on the surface of the world, among colors, waves, and the good smell of the soil. Lyrical and Critical Essays I simply admire my good fortune, in that I, who more than anyon else needed to bow down before someone, should have found a teacher, at just the right moment, and that I should have been able to continue to love and admire him from year to year and from work to work. Lyrical and Critical Essays But, like good fortune, they transfigure us. Lyrical and Critical Essays The theme of separation, whose importance in the book you bring Out very well, throws a good deal of light on this point. Lyrical and Critical Essays Of course your friends are as good as mine (who are not so grammatically inclined as you think). Lyrical and Critical Essays Together (and the two things are connected) with a good timetable. Lyrical and Critical Essays When Meur- sault Is on trial for shooting the ATab, Cleste tries to defend him by showing how good a person he is, but can say nothing but: Lyrical and Critical Essays My hero is indeed discouraged, and this Is why, as a good modern nihilist, he exalts servitude. Lyrical and Critical Essays And this is why it is good to escape from it sometimes. Lyrical and Critical Essays Is this a reason for not blessing them? No, every- thing that happens to me Is good, in a sense. Lyrical and Critical Essays A long time ago, I once lived a whole week luxuriating in all the goods of this world: we slept without a roof, on a beach, I lived on fruit, and spent half my days alone in the water. Often I longed for a good textbook that would provide basic information, freeing up precious class time for substantive discussions of policy issues. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The lack of a good, basic text hampered my teaching in various ways. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In my opinion, these approaches are neither theoretically adequate nor pedagogically sound, leading either to students who understand day-to-day politics (but ignore the more subtle play of power that shapes most social injustice) or to students who have a good grasp of how powerful cultural institutions shape consciousness (but do not know what happens in a legislature or court). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Because many of the conflicts in which school leaders become embroiled turn on questions of deeply held values, this emphasis lays the foundation for a good understanding of where and when struggles over values are most likely to arise. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Standards-based reform provides a good example of a policy area that for many decades was not an issue. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders POLICY ANALYSIS A Brief Definition Policy analysis has been defined as the ''evaluation of alternative government policies or decisions in order to arrive at the best (or a good) policy or decision in light of given goals, constraints, and conditions'' (Nagel, 1984, p. xiii). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Her article provides a good example of how a policy can be systematically analyzed. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Although many people have found Dahl's definition helpful, it leaves certain points obscure: Does A have to be consciously aware of exercising power over B? Does B have to be consciously aware of A's power? Can A's exercise of power cause B not to act? Has A exercised power if B believes that what A wants is good and eagerly performs the desired action? Is it ethical to exercise power over another? The controversy over power swirls around issues such as these. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The final type of power is persuasion, the overt attempt to affect the behavior of others by convincing them that the desired behavior is good. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good example is provided by Gaventa's (1980) book-length study of rural Appalachia, Power and Powerlessness. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Even so, over time the temptation will be strong to sacrifice the good of the district to the personal goal. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Wrong's book provides a good overview of the major theories about first dimension power and sensitive discussions of some of the ethical issues surrounding power. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders good salaries in the emerging information economy. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The United States has a distinctive political system that was devised in the late eighteenth century by men who had a good knowledge of political theory but few contemporary working models available for study. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Another way to monitor competitors is to establish a good network of local contacts and maintain positive relations with them. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Developing friendships in the community and participating in organizations such as Kiwanis, Rotary, and Soroptimist are good ways to ensure that one is involved in 'grapevine' communication. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Although the exact nature of this elite can vary-it may consist of the local 'good ole boys' in one place and of a group of highly educated patricians in another-membership in it is achieved through family or other social ties. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Members of this culture believe politics is (or should be) 'a public activity centered on some notion of the public good and properly devoted to the advancement of the public interest' (Elazar, 1994, p. 232). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders These interests reflect both the moralistic concern for the common good and their confidence in activist government. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Neither a pragmatic orientation nor appeals to tradition work as well in this culture as do good ideas that can be supported in an ethically convincing way. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In a moralistic environment, school leaders usually have the advantage that citizens consider education an important contribution to the common good and are inclined to support it. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders One of the leader's highest priorities should therefore be running a smooth, efficient, and businesslike operation that offers area taxpayers a good value for their tax dollars. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Equal opportunity exists when everyone has a similar chance to get a good education or find a decent job, regardless of race, sex, handicapping condition, age, or national origin. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders 'The political problem of mankind is to combine three things: Economic Efficiency, Social Justice, and Individual Liberty,' wrote British economist John Maynard Keynes in 1925 (as cited in Kutmer, 1984, p.1). Although many policy scholars would argue that more than 'three things' should be combined in public policy, most would agree with Keynes that the art of developing good policy involves finding a good equilibrium among competing values. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders As good elementary teachers know, if they do not make some rules about sharing toys and playground equipment, the same children will play with the most desirable items day after day, leading to a festering sense of resentment among the others. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Yet, good communication and teamwork in schools and districts do not develop in a vacuum-they flourish in an environment where fratemity is valued enough to provide time for it. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Like all orthodox Christians, adherents of the Religious Right believe that human beings, although created in the image of a good God, are sinners who often fall short of God's will. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders These problems can be overcome by making it easier for members of oppressed groups to receive a good education, obtain good jobs, and in general enjoy the good things the United States has to offer. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders To make good on those goals, the only tinkering to summer school should be an expansion. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Good. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The book offers a good introduction to some of the major values and ideological positions that shape-and could potentially shape-U.S. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In fact, throughout most of U.S. history, state legislatures have been ama144 Chapter 6 teurish bodies dominated by a group of each state's leading 'good ole boys,' who were better known for living it up during their brief visits to the state capital than for effective governing. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Among the recommended reforms were larger staffs and sufficient office space and equipment for those staffs to do a good job. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Although they usually have a good working relationship with the governor and his office, they may or may not work effectively with the legislature and usually hesitate to resist the governor or take independent initiatives. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good time to conduct such an assessment is when the legislature is in session. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The RAND Corporation, a California-based think tank, provides a good example. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders As groups that oppose conservative definitions of education issues, they have good reason to gather evidence to use to challenge them (Sabatier & Jenkins-Smith, 1993). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The development and spread of site-based management (SBM) provides a good example of how the EPPRC works. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In the next sections, the elements of good issue definition are described. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good issue definition includes a realistic solution for the problem it has identified and described. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good issue definition is expressed in powerful language that links the issue to deeply held values, hopes, fears, and aspirations. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders School choice is a good example. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Issues sometimes reach the governmental agenda because bureaucrats in state agencies-who have good access to policy makers-point out problems to them (Elling, 1996). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A regular reader of these journal features therefore develops a good sense of what is going on at both stages. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders She also finds good results from newer forms of choice, such as vouchers in Milwaukee and Arizona. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Although any legislator can introduce a bill into her own house, not every legislator makes a good sponsor. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders She has a good working relationship with the members of that committee and also with key officials in the house, such as the speaker or senate president, the majority leader, and the chair of the Appropriations Committee. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Usually such groups have concluded-often with good reason-that they have little chance of obtaining the policy changes they seek from the legislative branch. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good example is provided by the 1971 case, Pennsylvania Associa Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Naturally, administrators employed in such districts should establish a good working relationship with this individual, communicating their major policy concerns to him and using this district resource as much as possible. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Many school leaders make the mistake of neglecting the first two components; and then, whenever they become good and angry about a proposed policy change, they aggressively 'lobby' legislators or agency administrators who are strangers to them, hoping somehow to influence them. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Readers should note that good communication includes a willingness to receive messages as well as to send them; therefore, Figure 8.6 also includes suggestions for making oneself available to listen to government officials. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good government relations program educates those politicians involved. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders For all these reasons, a good government relations program represents a sound investment of money and time. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders 'Well, the good news is that this bill has just been introduced. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Harry also telephoned two SDE people with whom he had an especially good working relationship and several area superintendents, asking for their support. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders When the Gadfly retired, the legislature was still considering vouchers, but Jack felt that he had fought the good fight. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Everyone knows that the private sector is more efficient than the rigid and bureaucratic public one, so why not just privatize all the noneducational aspects of education? Let the market work its magic, motivating school service providers and administrators to provide good service at the lowest possible cost. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders As Figure 9.2 suggests, they have good reason to feel that way. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good example of such a policy is Social Security, which is not a form of insurance or old-age annuity but rather a redistribution of income through taxation. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good example of a mandate is a compulsory school attendance law. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good example of the use of inducements in education is Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good example of capacity building is the Venture Capital program in Ohio. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Voucher plans offer a good example of system change. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Levin and McEwan (2001) outline several steps for a good cost-effectiveness analysis. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Moreover, motivation, although necessary for good implementation, is not sufficient. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The first, and most important, question is, Do we have good reasons for adopting a new policy? The research on implementation suggests that both good and bad reasons for adopting policies exist. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Only two good reasons exist for adopting a new policy (Berman & McLaughlin, 1978). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In addition, a good project director coordinates actions to resolve problems. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Principals and central office leaders should be actively engaged in the evolutionary planning process that characterizes good implementations (Fullan, 2001; Louis & Miles, 1990). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Good education leaders thoughtfully employ a mixture of all three. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The principal may decide that this is a good time to retire or to initiate a search for a job in another district. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders If attempts at persuasion are successful, then leaders should be sure to maintain good channels of communication with these people throughout implementation to detect other misunderstandings early. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Presidents, governors, and other prominent leaders may push for a policy that they think will be popular and sound good in the publicity for their next campaign. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Today no excuse exists for failure; a good knowledge base, combined with thought and planning, will lead to success in this difficult endeavor. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders They have good reason to dread it-the implementation of any new policy is hard work at best and an embarrassing failure at worst. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders However, today no good reason exists for failure in policy implementation. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders They say the intent is good, but the implementation could prove difficult and costly. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders This article is a shortened version of the major findings of the Rand Change Agent Study and provides a good introduction to this influential early investigation of policy implementation in education. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders We cannot plan effectively if we are unaware of options and their relative merits; and we cannot convince our constituents that we have done good work and deserve continued support unless we can show them evidence that we have done what we promised and produced beneficial results. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Early in the study, a good evaluator identifies all the stakeholders, the people and groups involved in the program under study or those that might be affected by the outcome of the evaluation. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Moreover, evaluators with good political skills are careful to maintain communication with all stakeholders throughout the process so that no one has any unpleasant surprises when the final report is issued. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A good evaluation does not ignore this fact, but rather plans the evaluation with this in mind. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Issues of propriety are legal and ethical; a good evaluation must conform to accepted norms for research. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Because a formative evaluation is designed to help implementers make good decisions about what they are doing, it is not as threatening as a summative evaluation. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Unfortunately, policy evaluations are not always conducted in good faith. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Although the implementers usuallywant to run a good program that benefits children, they also have personal interests at stake. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders At one level, policy makers want good information that they can use to improve the policy in question or terminate it. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders One of their motives is to produce a thorough and accurate evaluation that will permit good policy decisions to be made. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Maneuvers to Prevent a Good Evaluation. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Because all the players may use maneuvers to reduce the chances of a good evaluation, education leaders need to be aware of the standard approaches to derailing a successful study. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders First, good communication helps head off major political problems. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders The major advantage of this option is that such organizations usually employ skilled, professional evaluators who are capable of doing a good study. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Unless obligated by a funding agency to act on a questionable evaluation, no good reason to do so exists. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Because evaluations vary greatly in quality, leaders should never uncritically accept them but should instead attempt to determine how good the study was. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A significant number of students were performing below grade level in their native language because they weren't given the opportunity to have a good, solid basis for literacy before going to a second language. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Guba and Lincoln give the reader a good overview of qualitative evaluation and also of the importance of involving stakeholders throughout the process. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Professionals work autonomously, without direct supervision; medicine is a good example of a profession (Lortie, 1975). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Teaching was regarded as a good temporary pursuit-ideal for women who wanted to earn a few dollars, for literate farmers who needed something to do in the winter months, and for young men not quite ready to enter business or read law. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In a strange sense it was even egalitarian, for all types of schools and teachers were considered good enough to participate in the education market although they might not survive for long. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Meanwhile, what are school leaders to do? A popular way to break a mixed message is to announce, 'I have good news and bad news.' Policy Studies for Educational Leaders But there is also good news. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Fuhrman's chapter provides a good introduction to the movement to make education in the United States more systematic and internally consistent. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Leadership for the common good: Tackling public problems in a shared power world. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A third is the Consumer Price Index 60 Chapter 5 (CPI), a general measure of the prices of goods and services prepared regularly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Other indicators of the economy's direction include: (1) sales of durable goods such as furniture, cars, and major appliances; (2) consumer installment credit; (3) business investment in plant and equipment; and (4) new housing starts (Friirnkin, 1987; 1994). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In general, an economic expansion is indicated by such signs as strong growth in the real GNP, a decline in the unemployment rate, and important increases in the sales of durable goods, consumer installment credit, new housing starts, and business investments. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In a village market, numerous vendors compete for customers and sales by shouting loudly, bargaining to make attractive deals, and inventing creative ways to display their goods. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Distributive policies bestow gifts on citizens; these gifts may be goods, services, or special privileges. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders A subsidy may consist of 'cash, goods, services, or land' (Lowi & Ginsberg, 1994, p. 389). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Inducements An inducement is a ''transfer of money [or in-kind grants] to individuals or agencies in return for the production of goods or services'' (McDonnell & Elmore, 1987, pp. 137-138). Policy Studies for Educational Leaders Title I has been a costly program with the federal government providing grant money and local districts contributing classroom space, furnishings, materials, supervision, and other tangible and intangible goods. Policy Studies for Educational Leaders In a market, goods and services are produced by competing providers, who try to attract customers by offering attractive prices or distinctive product features. If we yell 'Fire!' in a crowded theater, our freedom of speech is taken away. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy 46 Chapter Three Leo Moser points out that increased specialization was inevitable as people continued to move into the city: ''Crowded into a small area, often walled for defense and economic advantage, the members of various specialized artisan groups and social classes went their own way through life, perpetuating their own fragment of the total pattern. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Numerous laboratory experiments have demonstrated that rats crowded into an unnaturally dense environment develop emotional problems and eventually turn on themselves to reduce the population numbers. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy 'I In 1790, the U.S. population density was 4.5 persons per square mile; in 1990, it was 70.3 persons per square mile-over fifteen times more crowded than when the country was founded.' Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Like the experimental rats in the crowded cage, we sense the ill-defined stress and agitation, without being able to articulate what is happening to us. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Whether we are concerned with starving children in Africa, gang members in the inner city, crowded masses in Asia, or too many kids in the classroom, the inhumane reality seems to be that the more people there are, the more difficult it is to care about each one as a separate, unique, sacred human being. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The correlation between our increasingly crowded planet and our increasingly ill-tempered public disposition cannot be ignored. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Figures are according to Rose Hanes, executive director of PopulationEnvironment Balance, cited in Joseph Alper, 'A Crowded Planet,' Los Angeles Times Health Horizons, 29 March 1992, p. 14. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy As a consequence, he spent a good deal of time delighting in our good fortune. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The citizenry no longer is enlightened enough to make selfless and long-range decisions for the good of society. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy In it, he enunciated three basic arguments against licensing or censorship: (1) licensing was the evil offspring of a repressive church (much of Milton's life was spent fighting the church); (2) licensing was impractical (there simply were not enough good moral censors to be found); and (3) licensing frustrates the search for truth. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy as to its nature-due to his belief that men and women are rational and have enough common sense to work together for their own mutual good. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy First, the citizens must work for the greater common good-for society as a whole, for the concept of a social contract that commits them to a social grouping larger than their village. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Second, citizens in an intellectual state must be dedicated to the long-term good of their culture-to the next fifty years, not to the next profit-and-loss sheet or the next election. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Our entire cultural infrastructure is founded on the intellectual premise that human beings are rational and responsible enough to handle participatory self-government; they can join in a social contract to work for the greater good of society and for the long-range good of future generations. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Francis Bacon gave us the idea that knowledge is power, progress is good, and science is to be used to improve society. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Another aspect of post-intellectual education is the counter-intellectual trend toward 'progressive' education centering on the child's ability to feel positive about him- or herself-'feel-good' education aimed at promoting self-esteem, self-discovery, and self-acceptance. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Universal education is an intellectual idea, but when implemented, it has resulted in both a distended-intellectual vocational curriculum and a counter-intellectual 'feel-good' emphasis on self-realization; the intellectual goal of liberal arts has been abandoned. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The 1992 presidential campaign was not between the Yale-educated eastern elitist (George Bush) and the intellectual Rhodes scholar (Bill Clinton); it was between the images of the good of boy who calls Texas home and the saxophone-toting Arkansas traveler. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy If we make good decisions-if we think critically and solve our problems successfully-we will be able to hold on to our freedoms. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy If we do not make good decisions-if we do not solve our problems-we will see our freedoms gradually dissipating. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy From the perspective of Corporate America, the primary function of the U.S. citizen is simply to be a good consumer. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Although the structure of human thought is based on logical procedure from premise to conclusion, it is not proof against the frailties and the passions' When times were less complicated, a modicum of reason was good enough to get by. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Presently, it takes something like 500,000 electrons to represent one digital bitthe combination of one's and zero's that form the language of all digital communication; but two physicists at Cambridge University have built a circuit that uses just 50 to 100 electrons per bit-and Haroon Ahmed and Kazoo Nakazato feel there is a good chance that they can ultimately devise a system that will work with one-electron bits! Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The problem is not that television brings us bad programming (which is what concerns most critics); the problem is that television brings us good pictures. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy We rationalize: these are good things and a little erosion of our Fourth Amendment protections against 'unreasonable searches and seizures' seems a small price to pay for security and peace of mind. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy After all, is it not a good thing for law enforcement agencies to know who the drug addicts are? Should not our local cops know what is going on in the crack houses and brothels in our communities? Should they not know what is going on in the basement of my suspicious-looking neighbor? (And therefore, of course, do they not also have the right to know what is going on in my basement?) The Fishbowl Society: Loss of Privacy 95 Piecemeal Acceptance of Marketing Intrusions Bit by bit, we find ourselves more and more exposed-our credit balances, our political choices, our drinking record, our eating preferences. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy And we will feel good about it. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Eisenhower won World War II for us-a decidedly linear victory of Good over Evil. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy My simplified tautological explanation is this: The basic reason for all our societal problems is that we are not doing a good job of solving problems! What an insight! If only we could master the decision-making or problem-solving process, perhaps we could do a better job of solving problems. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Political activity has become a kind of flailing which creates frenzy but does little good, or even makes problems worse. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy In this post-intellectual climate, we just do not do a good job of working through our problems rationally. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy But we do not do a good job of using technology to solve problems. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy He then quotes magazine editor Abiko Seigo, who explains how isolation contributes to today's lack of moral substructure: 'Where they are coming from is a world where all the usual perspectives-like whether something is good or bad, smart or stupid, etc.-are irrelevant, because all of those things are judgments based on social relations. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Medical and Educational Specialization The medical field is another area where we have substituted faith in the technology of drugs and specialists rather than act with responsibility in preserving our own good health. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Ivan Illich argues that 'professional medicine may be causing more harm than good. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy In summarizing the psychological consequences of post-intellectualism, Leo Moser asks, 'For good or bad, we have emerged into a new and strange world. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy But in doing so it also broke the restricting bonds of tribal traditionalism and thereby launched humanity, for good or ill, on the fateful course that was to lead from hunting ground to megalopolis.' Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Hal Himmelstein writes, Television work is done in New York City and Los Angeles; the images, sound, and pacing of television tend to reflect the distinctive auras of both urban ecologies, which are subsequently embedded in our collective consciousness and which promise excitement, financial success, mobility, visibility, and emotional fulfillment-in short, the Great American Dream-the 'good life' as described in the myth of eternal progress and characterized by the perpetual economic expansion of the society and the growth of personal material compensations 6 What is it that attracts people to nature, to the out-of-doors, to the forest, mountains, desert, lakes and rivers? Camping. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy From Dallas to Melrose Place, pictures of the Good Life ceaselessly and subliminally reinforce our consumerism mindset. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy They are all part of the common establishment; consumerism is good; materialism is what makes the economy go round. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Christopher Lasch states, The rise of consumerism in this century-in which the individual's self-interest is the only good-created a society in which you don't need any public consensus as long as the economy can satisfy people's needs and expand them into ever increasing levels of desire and expectation.... Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy This emphasis on consumerism is especially debilitating for those who cannot afford the good life: the rural poor, the urban underclass, the economic Economic Destitution 149 misfits. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The problem is not that we see too many obscenities on NYPD Blue, but that we see too many obscenities in Bosnia and Baghdad; not that we hear too many bad words on cable, but that we hear Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Victimization of the Tribe In his 1995 book, The Good Life and Its Discontents, Robert Samuelson analyzes our contemporary cultural malaise as the failure of the Age of Entitlements. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy In our post-intellectual quagmire we are not doing a very good job of collective decision-making-or problem-solving. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Barbara Tuchman points out, however, that today we may have run out of these inherent advantages or 'cushions against folly' with which we started: 'Social systems can survive a good deal of folly when circumstances are historically favorable, or when bungling is cushioned by large resources or absorbed by sheer size as in the United States during its period of expansion. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The ideal of universal education has been watered down to a mush of post-intellectual 'feel-good' counselling and specialized vocational training. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy One explanation for the corruption during the Reagan years (it is estimated that over one hundred high-level Reagan appointees came under suspicion and/or were forced to leave office during his two terms) was that Reagan was committed totally to the American business ethic-an unfettered capitalistic, business-as-usual, profits-above-all-else, money~rrwkng-as-the-highest-good, mindset. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Reagan's clear economic philosophy echoed the words of Charles Wilson, secretary of defense under Eisenhower: 'What is good for the country is good for General Motors, and what's good for General Motors is good for the country.'' Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Whatever good they intend to accomplish, it must be done within a short-term framework. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy They know more than we do about what is good for us. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Vance Packard voiced the attitude of many research technologists and behavioral scientists two decades ago: 'People are raw material that needs perfecting, modifying, or at least improving, either for their own good or to suit the wishes of others. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Good purposes all. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy And if we cannot moderate our own short-term greeds and gratifications to pursue the long-range good of society, then we have no chance to maintain an ordered and intellectual civilization. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Cooperation is good, but everything that is worthwhile is achieved by competition, effort, and struggle-winning a mate, getting a job, earning a good grade, climbing a mountain, hitting a home run, getting a book published. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Capitalistic enterprise is good; it results in better products, financial security, and progress. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Society always pushed morality on us-good or bad, it was clear. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy This is how we describe success, the Good Life, societal position. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy It's a good start. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Emphasize Liberal Arts Education in Schooling One problem with our present educational system is the counter-intellectual push toward self-esteem education, progressive 'feel-good' curricula. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Greed is good. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy The intellectual idealism of the Enlightenment called for the creation of nation-states where individual citizens would put aside their local parochial concerns and work for the greater common good. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy It's a good start.'' Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy In reaffirming our cognitive commitment to reason, we need not abandon the affective virtues of beneficial emotions and good feelings. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy We cannot simply de cree that Freedom is Good, and Right has Won. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Donella H. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Classic capitalism assumed a degree of honesty and rationality by the purveyors and advertisers of goods, and it also assumed an equally intellectual sense of reason and discrimination on the part of the buyer. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy This has resulted in a post-intellectual system of commercialism based, not on the value of goods and services, but on perceptions and images that can most effectively be pushed into consumers' consciousness and subconsciousness. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Fritjof Capra summarizes this position: 'Within a nation Smith thought that the self-balancing market system was one of slow and steady growth, with continually increasing demands for goods and labor.'' Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy We purchase our goods, conduct our business, entertain ourselves, handle our financial affairs, and meet numerous diverse cultural needs without face-toface contact with other human beings. Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Yet those were the very values that taught our children to put material goods ahead of spiritual needs, to develop competitive rather than cooperative skills, . Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy Americans came to believe that it was no longer necessary to grapple with underlying issues of justice and equality as long as the goods kept coming.' Post Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy
At the same time, many of China's coastal cities have become crowded with peasants from the countryside who have sunk into urban poverty and unemployment. Supercapitalism America emerged victorious from World War II, already having survived the Great Depression, with both its economy and its democracy in good working order. Supercapitalism The result was an expression-however indirect and approximate-of what was then understood as the common good. Supercapitalism In our capacities as citizens seeking the common good, however, we have lost ground. Supercapitalism Their democracies, too, are finding it more and more difficult to articulate and act upon the common good. Supercapitalism They are doing what they're supposed to do, according to the current rules of the game-giving their customers good deals and thereby maximizing the returns to their investors. Supercapitalism Condemning Wal-Mart for not giving its employees better pay and health benefits may be emotionally gratifying but has little to do with the forces that have impelled Wal-Mart to keep wages and benefits low and bestow good deals on Wal-Mart's customers and investors. Supercapitalism It generated a larger proportion of good-paying jobs than before or since, and more economic security than ever for more of its people. Supercapitalism 'I don't take stock in this silly nonsense about working for anybody's good but our own because we are not. Supercapitalism 'I cannot conceive of one because for years I thought what was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa. Supercapitalism Yet the nation had charted a new directiontoward steady jobs at good wages within a system that broadly shared the fruits of prosperity-and created a middle class sufficiently large to tilt democratic capitalism toward broader equality of opportunity. Supercapitalism They were generous both with their time and with their opinions about what was good for the nation. Supercapitalism Something approximating the common good was achieved. Supercapitalism The shake-up began earlier than most of these theories suggest (the large productivity gains of the 195os and 196os slowed sharply in the early 1970s, for example, signaling something dramatic was happening), and escalated well into the present day-through the ups and downs of the business cycle, during Republican and Democratic administrations, in good times and bad, regardless of how brilliant or uncommonly stupid, rapaciously greedy or personally decent, the various leaders of business or government have been in the meantime. Supercapitalism Cornell economics professor and onetime regulator Alfred Kahn described the Bell System as 'a welfare state with the power to tax and use the proceeds to do good things.'2` Supercapitalism After the breakup, when competition heated up, all such subsidies ended, as did the 'good things.' Supercapitalism But even if these benign economic effects are granted, they do not necessarily settle the question of whether the growth and dominance of the financial sector has been a good thing for democratic capitalism. Supercapitalism Jack Welch, the legendary former chief executive of GE, named by Fortune 'manager of the century' had the good luck to become CEO in 1981, near the start of the long bull market. Supercapitalism But he did his bit to cut costs and add to GE investors' good fortunes. Supercapitalism Even when times were good-and for most of Welch's years, they were-he encouraged senior managers to replace to percent of their subordinates every year in order to keep GE competitive. Supercapitalism Its union wanted to preserve the good wages and benefits of its current members. Supercapitalism The service unions saw their mission less as preserving good jobs in danger of disappearing and more as boosting the prospects of people trapped in poor ones. Supercapitalism The result has not been especially good for people in their capacities as employees, however. Supercapitalism This is not particularly good news for the environment or the cause of energy conservation, but it is welcomed by members of a household who no longer have to wait to borrow the family car. Supercapitalism Top executives have had strong incentives to be more efficient: We as consumers have threatened to take our business elsewhere unless they do Of Two Minds 97 things as efficiently as possible, and we as investors have threatened to take our money elsewhere unless they show a good return on our investments. Supercapitalism When we find good deals on services, chances are we're also indirectly holding down someone else's wages and benefits in America. Supercapitalism CEOs do occasionally upgrade the skills of their employees in order to make them more productive and worth every penny of good wages and benefits. Supercapitalism Relentlessly pursuing good deals on ever more powerful computers, we have put pressure on both AMD and Intel. Supercapitalism They also had to maintain good relationships with public officials in order to be free to set wages and prices; to obtain regulatory permissions on fares, rates, or licenses; and to continue to secure government contracts. Supercapitalism These funds are so large (totaling hundreds of billions of dollars) and their average returns to investors so good (averaging tz to 2o percent in 2005, far better than an equity index fund) that a typical management fee of z percent of assets and 20 percent of profits is trifling by comparison. Supercapitalism As citizens, we may feel that inequality on this scale cannot possibly be good for a democracy. Supercapitalism I wasn't singlehandedly responsible, of course; a few thousand others joined me, probably with similar good intentions to the contrary notwithstanding. Supercapitalism Regulatory agencies ensured sufficient public subsidy to maintain good airline, bus, railroad, and phone service to these locales. Supercapitalism CalPERS had invested in Alcatel because it was a good bet-if Alcatel slimmed down and cut unnecessary costs, as seemed likely. Supercapitalism That's been good news for Chinese consumers and people who invest in China, but the social consequences have been decidedly mixed. Supercapitalism But there is reason to think we have inadvertently swung too far in the other direction-toward a society driven mainly by consumers and investors, one in which the idea of the common good has all but disappeared. Supercapitalism I don't see how we're ever going to create good middle-class jobs again unless our schools are far better- 1 which will require paying teachers enough to attract talented young men and women into our nation's classrooms (the law of supply and demand is not repealed at the schoolhouse door) and hiring more of them so that fewer children are in each room. Supercapitalism By the same token, a case could be made that affordable health insurance is a basic common good. Supercapitalism Business never had it so good. Supercapitalism The result has been a clamor of competing business interestsa cacophony so loud as to almost drown out any serious deliberation over the public good. Supercapitalism Opposing the measure was Continental Airlines, whose financial picture was so good it didn't need foreign capital, and stood to gain customers and profits if United went out of business.' Supercapitalism It is also to divert attention from the more difficult but more impor168 Politics Diverted 169 tant job of establishing new rules that protect and advance the common good, and keep supercapitalism from overwhelming politics. Supercapitalism It makes for good press and reassures the public. Supercapitalism Corporations that have signed codes of conduct promising good behavior appear to have taken important steps toward social responsibility, but the pressures operating on them to lure and keep consumers and investors haven't eased one bit. Supercapitalism Rather than labor in the impecunious vineyards of social work or teaching school in a poor community, Politics Diverted 171 or public service in general, they can get their MBA and thereafter attach themselves to a big corporation that issues an annual report on all the good things it does for society. Supercapitalism They can thereby do well and do good at the same time, or so they tell themselves. Supercapitalism Commitments to corporate social responsibility are also conveniently reassuring to talented or privileged young people who want both the skyhigh financial rewards of fast-track executive careers and the psychological rewards of doing some good in the world. Supercapitalism But consumers don't pay extra because of any presumed social good; they pay because it's worth it to them personally. Supercapitalism Similarly, companies that pay good wages and offer good benefits in order to attract and retain high-caliber employees are not being 'socially responsible'; they are merely practicing good management. Supercapitalism They're just good management practices that should-and, given the competitive pressures of supercapitalism, will-be undertaken regardless of how much or how little they benefit society. Supercapitalism Few industries have been more vilified than tobacco but tobacco companies have had no difficulty obtaining funding from investors eager to make a good return. Supercapitalism Most consumers want good deals, period. Supercapitalism Even when they're asked to define 'social responsibility,' consumers describe it in terms of personal consumer satisfaction rather than public good. Supercapitalism In a survey co-sponsored by the Wall Street journal, people were asked to rank forty-three activities that influence their opinions of corporations as 'good citizens.' Supercapitalism Because these battles take place outside normal political channels and are aimed at specific firms, they cast corporate executives in the unenviable roles of politicians seeking to broker compromises among competing visions of the common good. Supercapitalism But Wal-Mart's critics also want Wal-Mart to provide employees with good health insurance coverage, which, in my opinion, is no longer a responsibility employers should take on. Supercapitalism The issue in such wars is not what is the best policy overall, but whether a particular company is morally good. Supercapitalism Displays of corporate virtue may lull the public into thinking that a company can be trusted to do what's good for society even if costly to customers or shareholders. Supercapitalism It can even be persuaded by a clever media campaign that a company once disdained for disregarding the common good is heroically achieving it. Supercapitalism It also, conveniently, allows politicians to maintain good relations with the same companies and industries-collecting campaign donations, enjoying rounds of golf with their executives, tapping their corporate lobbyists for miscellaneous favors-while showing the public they're being 'tough' on the wrongdoers. Supercapitalism CORPORATE EXECUTIVES are not authorized by anyone-least of all by their consumers or investors-to balance profits against the public good. Supercapitalism Indeed, Google's refusal to comply with the U.S. government made good business sense because it protected the privacy of Google's American consumerswho would have been incensed had Google turned over information about them. Supercapitalism 'One of the less reported aspects of the U.S. business community is the tremendous amount of good they do, giving back to the communities in which they operate,' he said. Supercapitalism Corporations do some good deeds but corporate thank-you rituals mislead the public into believing companies do these things out of selflessness-indeed, that there is a 'self' there deserving commendation in the first place. Supercapitalism Good deals may depend on filling the air with gunk, filling the airwaves with sex and violence, or filling our stomachs with junk food. Supercapitalism This doesn't make them right, but the only way to make them wrongthe only way to stop companies from giving consumers and investors 2 good deals that depend on such moves-is to make them illegal. Supercapitalism It follows that the public must also beware of any claim by corporate executives that their company is doing something in order to advance the 'public good' or to fulfill the firm's 'social responsibility.' Supercapitalism Companies are not interested in the public good. Supercapitalism It is not their responsibility to be good. Supercapitalism They may do good things to improve their brand image, so as to increase sales and profits. Supercapitalism But they will not do good things because they are considered to be good. Supercapitalism But in the latter instances, such 'voluntary' good deeds are likely to be limited and temporary, extending only insofar as the conditions that made such 'voluntary' action pay off continue. Supercapitalism Corporate executives who sincerely wish to do good can make no better contribution than keeping their company out of politics. Supercapitalism There is no good reason why shareholders or other employees should reap Prosecutors point to the difficulty of proving individual intent when transactions involve many people, as is typically the case in a large corporation. Supercapitalism They cannot sacrifice good deals for their customers and investors in the belief that their company has a patriotic duty to hire more Americans or otherwise be a good American citizen. Supercapitalism Capitalism has become more responsive to what we want as individual purchasers of goods, but democracy has grown less responsive to what we want together as citizens. Supercapitalism The system for producing goods and services was far more predictable and stable than it is today, and more concentrated in a relatively few large firms, like the big three automakers (GM, Ford, and Chrysler). Supercapitalism China's market freedom does seem essential to its capitalist success; unless people there can own their property and exchange it without worrying that the central authority will confiscate their goods, they have no incentive to save and invest. Supercapitalism Fast, regular, and reliable transportation and communication brought raw materials from far corners of the country into factories and sent finished goods out to wholesalers and retailers all over the nation. Supercapitalism Like John Maynard Keynes three decades later, Hobson urged instead that advanced nations increase their domestic markets by making more of their citizens rich enough to buy domestically produced goods. Supercapitalism Harriman waxed enthusiastic: We must take out of competition the right to cut wages to a point which will not sustain an American standard of living, and we must recognize that capital is entitled to a fair and reasonable return ... that ... goods must be sold at a price which will enable the manufacturer to pay a fair price for his raw material, to pay fair wages to his men, and to pay a fair dividend on his investment.' Supercapitalism Whatever attacks may be made against them in theory, the large corporations have met the test of delivering the goods.'' Supercapitalism According to the chairman of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Council of Economic Advisers, the 'ultimate purpose' of the American economy was 'to produce more consumer goods.'' Supercapitalism America's largest corporations would plan and implement the production of a large volume of goods, gaining significant economies of scale and thereby reducing the cost of producing each unit. Supercapitalism There were several important consequences: first, large economies of scale, generating high productivity and hence significant profits; second, tens of millions of steady jobs; third, a wide distribution of the profits (downward to blue-collar workers and outward to smaller communities, farmers, and other constituents); fourth, millions of consumers who used this largesse to purchase the goods and services produced in ever larger quantities, thereby stabilizing the economy for large-scale production. Supercapitalism By 1986, for every $loo spent on goods produced in the United States, Americans were buying $45 worth of imports manufactured abroad. Supercapitalism In 1998, food manufacturers introduced slightly more than eleven thousand new products; more than two-thirds were condiments, candy and snacks, baked goods, soft drinks, cheeses, and ice cream novelties.' Supercapitalism On the losing side of the battle was the U.S. Association of Importers of Textiles and Apparel, representing J. C. Penney Company and other large retailers wanting access to cheaper imported goods.' Supercapitalism 'I don't see investors refusing to buy because they think the chief executive is overpaid, and I don't see union members boycotting nonunion stores that sell attractively priced foreign goods,' says Anthony M. Maramarco, a managing director at Babson Capital Management.' Supercapitalism Grossman conceded Wal-Mart does provide many goods at the lowest price, but pointed out that this 'sometimes comes at a high cost to society' The goal of the campaign was for Wal-Mart to 'make more money, but responsibly.'' Supercapitalism We thus have it in our power to reduce those social costs, thereby making the true price of the goods and services we purchase as low as possible. Supercapitalism Figures from Alan Greenspan, 'Goods Shrink and Trade Grows,' Wall Street journal, October 24, 1988, p. At. It is now generally ><\/i PREFACE agreed that from the beginning Nehru and Nasser had close political relations and enjoyed a good rapport. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Jordan's foreign policies, except for a short period (1955-7), and the inter-bloc policies of Iraq over the period prior to the Baghdad Pact of 1955, are good examples of 'pro-Western neutralism.' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Israel owed them a certain debt of gratitude and was interested in maintaining good relations with both in order to surmount the difficulties involved in the defense of her independence. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Salah al-Din was quoted as replying: 'I am also a partisan of peace, of a well-balanced world peace, because peace is our goal and wars will only do good for the imperialistic states.'~ Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism The efforts of the 'Free Officers' (the name of the group of young officers who took over Egypt in July 1952) to persuade the US to prove its good intentions by supplying Egypt with military and economic aid did not meet with success. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Syria's relations with the Western powers throughout the year is well-described in a British report:' Relations With Britain were at the outset good and the Syrian government in February approached H.M.G. with a vaguely defined object of reaching agreement on defense and other matters. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism The Bath had employed a utilitarian approach regarding the need to nurture good relations with the USSR. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism `Aflaq elucidated this point: 'The Arabs hope that the intentions of the Soviet state will have a good and practical impact on international politics.' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Al-`Azm appreciated that al-Dawalibi's move was to have considerable influence on the formulation of the Tripartite Declaration, which he considered to be, despite several disadvantages, relatively positive and a good change compared to the previous Western stands on the Arab-Israeli dispute. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Moreover, living at one of the world's great crossroads, the average Syrian politician is attracted by what he imagines to be a good international bargaining position. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Is it not with your aid that it [Israel] has acquired a navy and air power, commercial and military? Is it not with your aid that it possesses now your most modern and destructive weapons? You [Western powers] may say: Have we not offered you the same aid? Good God! You give Israel yards and you give us inches! Do you not realize that your unequal aid has a negative effect? Would you leave Israel and us to our private means? What do you think of the stream of immigration to Israel, you who have placed yourselves as guardians of peace? Why do you not take into consideration the explosive factors from this huge immigration? Do you think that Palestine can hold all these creatures? What have you done vis-d-vis these questions other than demonstrating your support for Israel? They [Western powers] say they cannot use force and compel Israel ... Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism I recommend the acceptance of the joint defense scheme as a good opportunity for the Arabs to reinforce themselves militarily and economically and to withstand the evil of Israel. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism statement-with respect to your itents-is not one more of your old ied to your decisions issued by the tine? Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism The letter concluded by promising that 'the Arab nations will keep in memory your country and government, this good deed and genuine help in supporting right and justice, and will never forget this noble and honorable attitude.'' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Such a conference, he reasoned, 'should be preceded by a good deal of preparation.' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Nehru warned that, if allowed to fester, the dispute could give 'rein to nationalist feelings which might spread over other parts of Africa with no good results.' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism There was a good rapport between Nehru and Najib, and the two paid earnest compliments to each other. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism On 20 September, in a message to Saut al-Sharq, a magazine published by the Indian Embassy in Cairo, Nehru sent his greetings and good wishes to the people of Egypt and the other Arab-speaking countries. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism I think that it would be a good thing for the countries concerned, and for the world at large, for this third area, which I call [a] no-war area, to grow in extent. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism That means that Egypt must inevitably join a war, whatever its nature ... in the long run Britain will suffer a good deal. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Nehru politely declined this offer, saying: 'I confess, I do not see how this can be done and what good it will do. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism The intimate atmosphere in Soviet-Syrian relations provided a good basis for deepening and strengthening these relations. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism it was a good thing for exporters to know that no matter how the world market stood they could always ship their goods to the Soviet Union .55 Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Al-`Azm had good reasons to be wary about any possible union with Egypt. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Nevertheless, a clearcut distinction was drawn between the 'good' and 'bad guys.' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Jansen, the Indian diplomat, told his British counterpart that 'he had heard on good authority' that al-Hawrani had appealed to Lebanese journalists, mainly pro-Western, to be more positive about him. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Although Jansen could not see any possibility of the replacement of the present Syrian government, he believed that there were good prospects of 'a serious split between the Ba'thists and the pro-communists and that something might come about on the lines of the plan which al-Hawrani was reported to be contemplating.'' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Lalovic had good evidence for that information, part of which was based on what Michel `Aflaq, whom he 1 92 SYRIA'S RIVAL SCHOOLS OF NEUTRALISM AND THE ROAD TO UNION used to meet frequently, told him. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Therefore the public begins to feel gratitude toward socialist countries, the feelings of friendship are growing, as well as the belief that socialism itself is a good thing. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism [and] it is quite impossible to be a good Muslim and a good communist. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Sukarno, in his speech at the Belgrade Conference, provided a good description of how these countries arrived at the policy of non-alignment: There was no prior consultation and agreement between us before we adopted our respective policies of non-alignment No. We each arrived at this policy inspired by common ideals, prompted by similar circumstances, spurred on by our experiences. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism 8 Relations with the conservative regimes of Jordan and Saudi Arabia were good. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism 'Positive neutralism,' he concluded, 'is nothing less than the revolt of nonaligned countries against the exercise of monopoly, by either party to the cold war, in the supply of goods, services or capital to underdeveloped lands. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism The economic aspect was another consideration of the utmost importance for Britain: the British textile industry for example, depended on Middle Eastern cotton; Britain was deeply involved in developing the oil industry in the Persian Gulf; and the Middle Eastern countries were excellent markets for exported goods from Britain. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism These agreements provided for Syrian exports of agricultural goods and textiles in exchange for manufactured products, especially capital goods. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Although the West also had quite an impressive representation in the Fair, and 'the quality and competitiveness of their goods showed up well in comparison with Soviet bloc goods,' the very weight of the Soviet bloc participation 'impressed the public and again provided a front-window for the public display of communist activities. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism 128 Recently declassified Polish documents have confirmed that, in late 1956, an arms deal was concluded between the Syrian and Polish governments for a total amount of US$7,785,160 worth of goods. Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Expressing the government view, al-Ra'i al-'Amm regarded such fears as groundless, 'because the agreement provided that Syria could repay Russia either in goods or in currency and there was no reason why Syria should make payment solely in goods.'m Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism A similar view was held by Hasan Jabbara, President of the Economic Development Council: Syria would repay Russia in Syrian produce only if Syria were unable to sell her goods on the international market... Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism According to the agreement, the USSR would purchase Syrian cotton and grain, and Syria, in exchange, would import goods of Soviet make, 'including machinery, equipment, and other materials.' Syria and the Doctrine of Arab Neutralism Positive neutralism was nothing less than the revolt of non-aligned countries against the exercise of monopoly, by either party to the Cold War, in the supply of goods, services or capital to underdeveloped lands. Agents opened fire in crowded streets on those who fled, wounding innocent passersby as well as those pursued. Syria Unmasked Some are so crowded that prisoners cannot sleep lying down; they must either crouch on the floor or sleep in shifts while others stand. Syria Unmasked Though we were very crowded, we could talk. Syria Unmasked But it was very crowded. Syria Unmasked Between 198o and 1982, when prisons were crowded with opposition activists, prison authorities were especially punitive. Syria Unmasked As recently as 1987, Amnesty International estimated the prisoner population of Tadmur at 5,000-6,000, which shows how crowded the prison is believed to be (Syria: Torture, p. 35). Syria Unmasked Syrian citizens fear their government-for good reason-and are almost completely excluded from participating in it. Syria Unmasked Even good friends would not come into our home. Syria Unmasked After being alone in the interrogation cells, it was good to be with others. Syria Unmasked One implication was unmistakable: strikes to win concessions on wages and working conditions were to be discarded for the greater good that the Ba'thist regime claimed to represent. Syria Unmasked Those who remained enjoyed good relations with Arab neighbors.2s Syria Unmasked They M were able to speak out publicly on Palestinian political matters, but the mukhabarat always kept a close watch and the authorities expected Palestinian organizations to be on good terms with the regime-and to maintain close relations with the Bath party.5z Syria Unmasked The state also enlisted intellectuals with carrot-and-stick policies: supporters were awarded good jobs and a comfortable living; critics often could not find work or were harassed and threatened as 'agents of imperialism.' Syria Unmasked A diplomamill for propagandists, the institute did not produce good reporters, even by the standards of the editors, who often refused to hire its graduates. Syria Unmasked By Syrian standards their pay is very good, with generous bonuses, housing allowances, and opportunities for foreign travel. Syria Unmasked BROADCAST MEDIA Syrian broadcasters air a good deal of fictional, cultural, and other material that is not directly political, so they are less drab than the newspapers. Syria Unmasked In spite of the censure, the State Department seemed almost at pains at times to maintain good relations with Syria-even if it meant obscuring human rights issues. Syria Unmasked Though they cannot poke fun at Asad, Syrian cartoons can be very good and quite effective as political criticism. Syria Unmasked Rif'at openly established a market in Damascus called the Soldiers' Suq that sold goods smuggled from Lebanon or stolen from the state. Syria Unmasked
He seemed to perceive no soul in that crowded room; he might have been walking in a jungle. The Good Soldier I don't know how she managed it, but, for all the time they were at Nauheim, she contrived never to let those two be alone together, except in broad daylight, in very crowded places. The Good Soldier THE GOOD SOLDIER By Ford Madox Ford A Digireads.com The Good Soldier Publishing 16212 Riggs Rd Stilwell, KS, 66085 The Good Soldier By Ford Madox Ford ISBN: 1-4209-2560-1 This edition copyright ® 2005 This book and many others are also available in electronic format. The Good Soldier We had known the Ashburnhams for nine seasons of the town of Nauheim with an extreme intimacy-or, rather with an acquaintanceship as loose and easy and yet as close as a good glove's with your hand. The Good Soldier You will perceive, therefore, that our friendship has been a young-middle-aged affair, since we were all of us of quite quiet dispositions, the Ashbumhams being more particularly what in England it is the custom to call 'quite good people.' The Good Soldier Yet, in the name of God, what should I know if I don't know the life of the hearth and of the smoking-room, since my whole life has been passed in those places? The warm hearthside!-Well, there was Florence: I believe that for the twelve years her life lasted, after the storm that seemed irretrievably to have weakened her heart-I don't believe that for one minute she was out of my sight, except when she was safely tucked up in bed and I should be downstairs, talking to some good fellow or other in some lounge or smoking-room or taking my final turn with a cigar before going to bed. The Good Soldier So well set up, with such honest blue eyes, such a touch of stupidity, such a warm good heartedness! And she-so tall, so splendid in the saddle, so fair! Yes, Leonora was extraordinarily fair and so extraordinarily the real thing that she seemed too good to be true. The Good Soldier To have all that and to be all that! No, it was too good to be true. The Good Soldier Now, I'm in for it and I'll really have a good time for once in my life-for once in my life!' It was in the dark, in a carriage, coming back from a hunt ball. The Good Soldier Yes, I had to realize that I had been spoilt even for the good time when it came. The Good Soldier Good God, are all these fellows monstrous idiots, or is there a freemasonry between all of them from end to end of the earth?... The Good Soldier I had to go out to Waterbury just after Florence's death because the poor dear old fellow had left a good many charitable bequests and t had to appoint trustees. The Good Soldier l arrived, however, too late to be of any good if 1 could have been of any good. The Good Soldier He would say how much the society of a good woman could do towards redeeming you, and he would say that constancy was the finest of the virtues. The Good Soldier For all good soldiers are sentimentalists-all good soldiers of that type. The Good Soldier Good God, what did they all see in him? For I swear there was all there was of him, inside and out; though they said he was a good soldier. The Good Soldier Well, I fancy he could put up a pretty good deal of talk when there was no man around to make him feel shy. The Good Soldier He talked like quite a good book-a book not in the least cheaply sentimental. The Good Soldier I seemed to hear the brain ask and the eyes answer with all the simpleness of a woman who was a good hand at taking in qualities of a horse-as indeed she was. The Good Soldier We took for granted that we all liked beef underdone but not too underdone; that both men preferred a good liqueur brandy after lunch; that both women drank a very light Rhine wine qualified with Fachingen waterthat sort of thing. The Good Soldier The given proposition was, that we were all 'good people.' The Good Soldier And, since these dinners were rather expensive (you had to take the Grand Duke and a good many of his suite and any members of the diplomatic bodies that might be there)-Florence and Leonora, putting their heads together, didn't see why we shouldn't give the Grand Duke his dinner together. The Good Soldier She was always an Anglo-maniac, was Florence; the Paris edition of the New York Herald was always good enough for me. The Good Soldier We didn't; we hadn't any claims; we were just 'good people.' The Good Soldier Well, she was a good actress. The Good Soldier Leonora was a good actress too. The Good Soldier By Jove she was good! I tell you, she would listen to me by the hour, evolving my plans for a shock-proof world. The Good Soldier I knew none of their friends; they were for me just good people-fortunate people with broad and sunny acres in a southern county. The Good Soldier Just good people! By heavens, I sometimes think that it would have been better for him, poor dear, if the case had been such a one that I must needs have heard of itsuch a one as maids and couriers and other Kur guests whisper about for years after, until gradually it dies away in the pity that there is knocking about here and there in the world. The Good Soldier It would have pipped him a good deal to have found so much, and he was not in the ordinary way a gambler. The Good Soldier She could force him to do anything; in his clumsy, good-natured, inarticulate way he was as frightened of her as of the devil. The Good Soldier So 1 do set down a good deal of Leonora's mismanagement of poor dear Edward's case to the peculiarly English form of her religion. The Good Soldier So, every now and then some financier whom he met about would give him a good, sound, profitable tip. The Good Soldier So it had looked very well-4he benevolent, wealthy couple of good people, acting as saviours to the poor, dark-eyed, dying young thing. The Good Soldier It let Florence into things and Florence was the only created being who had any idea that the Ashbumhams were not just good people with nothing to their tails. The Good Soldier Good people, be they ever so diverse in creed, do not threaten each other. The Good Soldier You're a good young man,' and she added, whilst 1 was getting out of the room to send Florence to her aunt's rescue: 'We ought to tell you more. The Good Soldier Well, I always say that an overmastering passion is a good excuse for feelings. The Good Soldier And it is a good excuse for straight actions-she might have bolted with the fellow, before or after she married me. The Good Soldier That helped Florence a good deal. The Good Soldier So at ten o'clock at night the door closed upon Florence, who had gently, and, as if reluctantly, backed up that fellow's recommendations; and she would wish me good night as if she were a cinquecento Italian lady saying good-bye to her lover. The Good Soldier They made me feel comfortable with him, good towards him; they made me trust him. The Good Soldier 'Well,' I answered gaily, 'you're not going to accuse him of not being a good husband, or of not being a good guardian to your ward?' She spoke then, slowly, like a person who is listening to the sounds in a sea-shell held to her ear-and, would you believe h?-she told me afterwards that, at that speech of mine, for the first time she had a vague inkling of the tragedy that was to follow so soon-although the girl had lived with them for eight years or so: 'Oh, I'm not thinking of saying that he is not the best of husbands, or that he is not very fond of the girl.' The Good Soldier Leonora wanted to keep him for-what shall 1 say-for the good of her church, as it were, to show that Catholic women do not lose their men. The Good Soldier In such circumstances of clamour, of outcry, of the crash of many people running together, of the professional reticence of such people as hotel-keepers, the traditional reticence of such 'good people' as the Ashbumhams-in such circumstances it is some little material object, always, that catches the eye and that appeals to the imagination. The Good Soldier And that miserable woman must have got it in the face, good and strong. The Good Soldier like a very good novelist for the matter of that, if it's the business of a novelist to make you see things clearly. The Good Soldier Because, of course, if you come to figure it out, a sudden pouring forth of passion by a man whom you regard as a cross between a pastor and a father might, to a woman, have the aspect of mere praise for good conduct. The Good Soldier For every man there comes at last a time of life when the woman who then sets her seal upon his imagination has set her seal for good. The Good Soldier 1, for instance, am a rather greedy man; I have a taste for good cookery and a watering tooth at the mere sound of the names of certain comestibles. The Good Soldier He drank a good deal, at that time-a steady soaking of drink every evening till long after they had gone to bed. The Good Soldier And Edward replied with his sort of sulky good nature: 'As for you, you looked like old Mother Sideacher.' The Good Soldier 1 dare say it would have made Leonora, too, look a little heavy and a little stupid, for it was not a good photograph. The Good Soldier I suppose, really, he did not love her because she was never mournful; what really made him feel good in life was to comfort somebody who would be darkly and mysteriously mournful. The Good Soldier To do both justice Leonora has since acknowledged that she was in the wrong at that time and that Edward was following out a more far-seeing policy in nursing his really very good tenants over a bad period. The Good Soldier It was not as if the whole of his money came from the land; a good deal of it was in rails. The Good Soldier But Edward had a very good set of tenants who did their best for him and for themselves. The Good Soldier I dare say it had a good deal of influence on their mentalities. The Good Soldier It was no good my spiritual advisers trying to console me.' The Good Soldier Edward came fairly well out of the affair in the public estimation; but it did him, mentally, a good deal of harm. The Good Soldier That question of first impressions has always bothered me a good deal-but quite academically. The Good Soldier It was he, therefore, who took me over my own property and I saw a good deal of him and of a nice girl called Mary, to whom he was engaged. The Good Soldier I discovered from his employers that he was just all that he appeared, honest, industrious, high-spirited, friendly and ready to do anyone a good turn. The Good Soldier As a matter of fact, my property in Philadelphia was mostly real estate in the old-fashioned part of the city and all 1 wanted to do there was just to satisfy myself that the houses were in good repair and the doors kept properly painted. The Good Soldier I understand also that he was a good cricketer. The Good Soldier On the other hand, Leonora did like to have a good time, now and then, and, as the priest saw it, if Edward could be got to like having a good time now and then, too, there would be a bond of sympathy between them. The Good Soldier It was a good idea, but it worked out wrongly. The Good Soldier She did not care for public dances, but she was relieved to see that Edward appeared to be having a good time with several amiable girls. The Good Soldier She did not care two buttons for Edward or for any man and he was asking her to risk a very good situation with the Grand Duke. The Good Soldier Take a good sleep now and come and see me this afternoon.' The Good Soldier She had better go that very morning; it was no good arguing with a man in Edward's condition. The Good Soldier She was quite a good-natured woman. The Good Soldier Whilst they were in the same station in Burma he borrowed a good deal of money-though, really, since Major Basil had no particular vices, it was difficult to know why he wanted it. The Good Soldier And when I say that he borrowed a good deal of money from Edward I do not mean to say that he had more than a thousand pounds from him during the five years that the connection lasted. The Good Soldier I am a pretty good head at figures, but my mind, still, sometimes mixes up pounds with dollars and I get a figure wrong. The Good Soldier But I know that, two days later, without her having said more than I have reported to you, Leonora and her attorney had become the trustees, as 1 believe it is called, of all Edward's property, and there was an end of Edward as the good landlord and father of his people. The Good Soldier I believe that was very good for her health and it was also very inexpensive. The Good Soldier It was probably also very good for Edward's health, because he pranced about mostly with Mrs. Basil, who was a nice woman and very, very kind to him. The Good Soldier He was never a man of the deeds of heroism sort and it was just as good for him to be sniped at up in the hills of the North Western frontier, as to be shot at by an old gentleman in a top-hat at the bottom of some spruit. The Good Soldier It would have done him a great deal of good to get killed. The Good Soldier 1 am no good at geography of the Indian Empire. The Good Soldier Edward just saved himself from saying: 'Good God!' You see, he had not the least idea of what Leonora knew-about Maisie, about Mrs. Basil, even about La Dolciquita. The Good Soldier The curious, discounting eye which one woman can turn on another did not prevent her seeing that Mrs. Basil was very good to Edward and Mrs. Maidan very good for him. The Good Soldier Incomprehensible! Why, she asked herself again and again, did none of the good deeds that she did for her husband ever come through to him, or appear to him as good deeds? By what trick of mania could not he let her be as good to him as Mrs. Basil was? Mrs. Basil was not so extraordinarily dissimilar to herself. The Good Soldier And it complicated matters a good deal that Edward, at about this time, was really a little in love with her. The Good Soldier 1 don't in the least blame Leonora for her coarseness to Florence; it must have done Florence a world of good. The Good Soldier It was a remarkably good stirrup. The Good Soldier So I guess Florence had told Miss Hurlbird a good bit about Edward Ashbumham in a few scrawled words-and that that was why the old lady did not wish the name of Hurlbird perpetuated. The Good Soldier All I wanted it for was to be able to give Nancy Rufford a good time. The Good Soldier I knew that her needs at that time were limited to good chocolates, and a good horse or two, and simple, pretty frocks. The Good Soldier But even if I gave a million and a half dollars to these institutions 1 should still have the equivalent of about twenty thousand a year English, and I considered that Nancy could have a pretty good time on that or less. The Good Soldier And yet, to me, living in the house, enveloped with the charm of the quiet and ordered living, with the silent, skilled servants whose mere laying out of my dress clothes was like a caress-to me who was hourly with them they appeared like tender, ordered and devoted people, smiling, absenting themselves at the proper intervals; driving me to meets-just good people! The Good Soldier He was, she realized gone from her for good. The Good Soldier Yet still, on the winter mornings he would ride up to her shafts and just say: 'Good day,' and look at her with eyes that were not imploring, but seemed to say: 'You see, I am still, as the Germans say, A. D.-at disposition.' The Good Soldier She threw with exactitude pennies to the boys who opened gates for her; she sat upright on the seat of the high dog-cart; she waved her hands to Edward and Nancy as they rode off with the hounds, and every one could hear her clear, high voice, in the chilly weather, saying: 'Have a good time!' Poor forlorn woman!... The Good Soldier It was a case that had excited a good deal of sympathy in that part of the county. The Good Soldier Leonora's headaches seemed to have gone for good. The Good Soldier She probably said a good deal more to Edward than I have been able to report; but that is all that she has told me and I am not going to make up speeches. The Good Soldier She said to herself that she was no good; that she had failed in all her efforts-in her efforts to get Edward back as in her efforts to make him curb his expenditure. The Good Soldier But she added: 'We're no good-my mother and L' Leonora said, with her fierce calmness: 'No. The Good Soldier No. You're not no good. The Good Soldier It's I that am no good. The Good Soldier Edward, however, kept the papers of the week, after his methodical fashion, in a rack in his gun-room, and when she had finished her breakfast Nancy went to that quiet apartment and had what she would have called a good read. The Good Soldier It was not a good situation for a girl. The Good Soldier It was no good commanding her. The Good Soldier The girl must become an adulteress; she had wronged Edward by being so beautiful, so gracious, so good. The Good Soldier It was sinful to be so good. The Good Soldier For I ask myself unceasingly, my mind going round and round in a weary, baffled space of pain-what should these people have done? What, in the name of God, should they have done? The end was perfectly plain to each of them-it was perfectly manifest at this stage that, if the girl did not, in Leonora's phrase, 'belong to Edward,' Edward must die, the girl must lose her reason because Edward died-and, that after a time, Leonora, who was the coldest and the strongest of the three, would console herself by marrying Rodney Bayham and have a quiet, comfortable, good time. The Good Soldier What then, should they have done? worked out in the extinction of two very splendid personalities-for Edward and the girl were splendid personalities, in order that a third personality, more normal, should have, after a long period of trouble, a quiet, comfortable, good time. The Good Soldier Edward is dead; the girl is gone-oh, utterly gone; Leonora is having a good time with Rodney Bayham, and I sit alone in Branshaw Teleragh. The Good Soldier I don't resent it-but I have never been the least good. The Good Soldier Florence selected me for her own purposes, and I was no good to her; Edward called me to come and have a chat with him, and 1 couldn't stop him cutting his throat. The Good Soldier It was, nevertheless, possible that if she could see someone from Branshaw it might soothe her and it might have a good effect. The Good Soldier And I wasn't the least good when 1 got to Ceylon; and the nurse wasn't the least good. The Good Soldier Nothing has been the least good. The Good Soldier Is there any terrestial paradise where, amidst the whispering of the olive-leaves, people can be with whom they like and have what they like and take their ease in shadows and in coolness? Or are all men's lives like the lives of us good people-like the lives of the Ashbumhams, of the Dowells, of the Ruffords-broken, tumultuous, agonized, and unromantic, lives, periods punctuated by screams, by imbecilities, by deaths, by agonies? Who the devil knows? For there was a great deal of imbecility about the closing scenes of the Ashbumham tragedy. The Good Soldier 1 daresay it worked out for the greatest good of the body politic. The Good Soldier She certainly had loved him for what I call the public side of his record-for his good soldiering, for his saving lives at sea, for the excellent landlord that he was and the good sportsman. The Good Soldier But it is quite possible that all those things came to appear as nothing in her eyes when she discovered that he wasn't a good husband. The Good Soldier It is nothing to the point that she let him have it good and strong as soon as she discovered that he had been unfaithful to Leonora and that his public services had cost more than Leonora thought they ought to have cost. The Good Soldier Nancy would be bound to let him have it good and strong then. The Good Soldier There is another point that worries me a good deal in the aspects of this sad affair. The Good Soldier And there it is also that all those three presented to the world the spectacle of being the best of good people. The Good Soldier I assure you that during my stay for that fortnight in that fine old house, 1 never so much as noticed a single thing that could have affected that good opinion. The Good Soldier So, I presume, I don't come of quite such good people as the Ashbunnhams. The Good Soldier It was a very clear winter morning, with a good deal of frost in it. The Good Soldier We passed the hounds in the level bit of road beside the high trees going into Fordingbridge and Edward pulled up the dog-cart so that Nancy might say good-bye to the huntsman and cap him a last sovereign. The Good Soldier Edward was talking with a good deal of animation about the necessity of getting the numbers of the Hampshire territorials up to the proper standard. The Good Soldier Having rattling good time. The Good Soldier But 1 thought that perhaps that would not be quite English good form, so I trotted off with the telegram to Leonora. The Good Soldier And, if they had not enough money to get along with, they might have cut their throats, or sponged on her family, though, of course, Florence wanted such a lot that it would have suited her very badly to have for a husband a clerk in a dry-goods store, which was what old Hurlbird would have made of that fellow. The Good Soldier Mrs. Ashbumham caused her husband to reply, with a letter a little more jocularsomething to the effect that Colonel Powys ought to give them some idea of the goods that he was marketing. The Good Soldier
Both the confessional mode of consciousness raising and the elevation of domestic life into an object available for scrutiny and assessment (in which good conduct could be awarded the metaphorical badge of the `good feminist') were also profoundly moralistic and ultimately inhibiting. Theory, Culture & Society Again, in the same way that private child-care arrangements were exposed to political scrutiny and judgement, women's sexual preferences have now become an indicator of the 'good feminist' - a legitimate object of political evaluation. Theory, Culture & Society So, instead of being wholly good, the family became wholly bad. Theory, Culture & Society The discussion was really good. Theory, Culture & Society When the woman was discussing it with the psychiatrist, that was really good. Theory, Culture & Society This was partly because of their very good relationship with the youth leader at the club, Jenny, who had a lot of confidence in the girls and encouraged them to do things they would otherwise have been unlikely to do. Theory, Culture & Society We shouldn't have thought to ourselves, we're really good and that. Theory, Culture & Society That annoyed us first of all, but we were, when you think about it now, we were being patronizing, saying, `We're good, we've accepted it.' Theory, Culture & Society Carol: After I told all my friends, I wrote off to a sort of gay group, Parents' Enquiry, but that wasn't much good. Theory, Culture & Society Then we met, and we liked each other sort of straight away, it was good it was. Theory, Culture & Society Maria: Sometimes some of them have good ideas: when one of them actually does say something intelligent, you can't believe it. Theory, Culture & Society She went down to the GP to get a letter, and he told her, 'It's no good taking her somewhere unless she wants to change.' Theory, Culture & Society Her mum was good, she was talking to me, being more kind than my mum. Theory, Culture & Society It was really good, just talking about it properly ... but she did say she thought once I'd slept with Elaine I'd go off it. Theory, Culture & Society She interpreted the event as evidence of Margaret's and Ann's greater tolerance towards lesbianism, and since it was Ann (Jo's mother) who told her about the incident, she was obviously in a good position to make this kind of assessment. Theory, Culture & Society And after all that, Elaine was asleep! But it was really good, I'm glad that I talked to Mum like that. Theory, Culture & Society Maria: She really enjoys it, she's really good at her work. Theory, Culture & Society Her colleagues at work know that she is a lesbian and a feminist and seem accepting, and her relationship with them is quite good in spite of the fact that they have little in common. Theory, Culture & Society I met them every Thursday evening over a period of ten weeks (they all attended practically every session) and chatted to them no more often than to any of the other girls, though in a sense the contact was special in that they knew I was a good friend of Jenny. Theory, Culture & Society (Powers, 1859, quoted in Holes, 1979: 239) And: We care for the evils affecting women most of all because they react upon the whole of society, and abstract from the common good. Theory, Culture & Society Since it was argued that intellectual work impaired women's reproductive processes, higher education for women was indeed a danger to `Britain's proud position among the nations of the world' (quoted ibid.: 20): 'Many of the most cultivated and able families of the English speaking race will have become extinct, through the prime error of supposing that an education which is good for men must also be good for women' (quoted in Duffin, 1978: 82). Theory, Culture & Society Among the advocates of a good education for middle-class girls during the latter part of the nineteenth century, it had been those who were uncompromising in their demands for a curriculum identical to that of middle-class boys who had been able to achieve most success through their capture of large numbers of girls' day schools. Theory, Culture & Society Deeply implicated in this complex positioning and in the specific consolidation of the role of housewife/mother during the twentieth century are notions of natural difference and the importance of good mothering to social order. Theory, Culture & Society Yet it seemed remarkably unconducive to the promotion of trust and good relations as well as unlikely to encourage the co-operation of young people in similar instances in the future, since for many of them the experience 1 of the police and courts might well be more painful than the original sexual encounter. Theory, Culture & Society For example David Cooper said in Death of the Family (1971): 'Making love is good in itself and the more it happens in any way possible or conceivable between as many people as possible more and more of the time, so much the better' (quoted in Segal, 19836: 53). Theory, Culture & Society Whether make-up renders women respectable or deviant, whether muscular bodies are in or out, whether streamlining is good or bad design (Hebdige, 1981), indeed whether form is considered relevant at all - and here I am talking not only about appearances and commodities but also about fashions in language, ideas and morality - is to a large extent consequent upon combinations of existing meanings and the historical moment in which they come into being. Theory, Culture & Society Interestingly, in symbiotic relation to this position - the daughter of it, as it were - is the apparently progressive polemical pursuit of `positive images', a still widely current feminist and socialist convention, which, in addition to embodying rather simple notions of the good and the true, recalls and confirms the idea that images are able to persuade (to brainwash) in an unproblematic manner. Theory, Culture & Society A good deal of feminist intellectual work has documented the ways in which women have both been targeted as consumers and done a major part of the labour involved (approximately 80 per cent of purchasing power in the Western world is wielded by women: Scott, 1976). Theory, Culture & Society And, of course, these theorizations have themselves had practical experiential consequences in that they have acted as a form of permission entitling members of today's left intelligentsia (Barnett, 1986) to enjoy consuming images and commodities (which of course does not necessarily mean spending lots of money) without having to feel anxious about whether these activities are good and correct. Theory, Culture & Society A sense of my own power and good relations with the men in my life - my sons, ex-husband, lover, household members and colleagues - had defused the intense engagement and resoluteness of the earlier period. Theory, Culture & Society Good ads, the ones that win awards or acclaim, do so on the basis of the `quality' of the ad as a product in DISCRIMINATING OR DUPED? 179 itself, and not on the basis of marketing success (though there may be some covert consideration of what is being advertised). Theory, Culture & Society Prizes awarded to the best ads by the industry itself mobilize distinctions, not between ads and other forms, but between `good' ads and `bad' ads. Theory, Culture & Society Our intention was also to 'write against' the common view expressed by Raymond Williams in the 1960s and still widespread today that 'the pretty clever television advertisement' did not belong in the category of 'good' or significant culture (Williams, 1980: 364). Theory, Culture & Society Consumer co-operatives from the time of Sidney and Beatrice Webb onwards have also focused predominantly on securing low prices and good quality for their members, although they have done this not only by increasing restrictive legislation and consumer rights, but also by developing their own manufacturing and retailing bases. Theory, Culture & Society Ehrenreich, B. and English, D. (1979) For Her Own Good. Theory, Culture & Society Steedman, Carolyn (1986) Landscape for a Good Woman. Theory, Culture & Society Toner, Michael (1987) 'Should a father be afraid to kiss his daughter good-night?', Sunday Express, 28 June. Theory, Culture & Society It was a period of political conservatism in which the 'free choice' of goods came to symbolize the 'freedom' of the free world. Theory, Culture & Society During this conservative period marked by the Cold War, 'consensus' and conformity, the free choice of goods came to symbolize the 'freedom' of the Free World (Ewen, 1976). Theory, Culture & Society Although politically all these groups are likely to have been involved in the boycott of South African goods (for example), within the conceptual framework that I am examining the potential of activism at the point of consumption has largely been neglected. Theory, Culture & Society Its object has consistently been to protect and enlighten the consumer by monitoring the quality of prices and goods, encoding and publicizing consumer rights, and so forth. She heard them stamping and crowing on the floor above her head the moment they woke. To the Lighthouse III But what after all is one night? A short space, especially when the darkness dims so soon, and so soon a bird sings, a cock crows, or a faint green quickens, like a turning leaf, in the hollow of the wave. To the Lighthouse Lodging in the same house with her, he had noticed too, how orderly she was, up before breakfast and off to paint, he believed, alone: poor, presumably, and without the complexion or the allurement of Miss Doyle certainly, but with a good sense which made her in his eyes superior to that young lady. To the Lighthouse Their entrails, as Andrew said the other day, were all over the floor; but then what was the point, she asked, of buying good chairs to let them spoil up here all through the winter when the house, with only one old woman to see to it, positively dripped with wet? Never mind, the rent was precisely twopence halfpenny; the children loved it; it did her husband good to be three thousand, or if she must be accurate, three hundred miles from his libraries and his lectures and his disciples; and there was room for visitors. To the Lighthouse She was not good enough to tie his shoe strings, she felt. To the Lighthouse He hated him for coming up to them, for stopping and looking down on them; he hated him for interrupting them; he hated him for the exaltation and sublimity of his gestures; for the magnificence of his head; for his exactingness and egotism (for there he stood, commanding them to attend to him); but most of all he hated the twang and twitter of his father's emotion which, vibrating round them, disturbed the 36 perfect simplicity and good sense of his relations with his mother. To the Lighthouse The children were good to him. To the Lighthouse Possibly the greatest good requires the existence of a slave class. To the Lighthouse He took it scientifically in complete good faith. To the Lighthouse This going off after luncheon for a walk, even though Andrew was with them-what could it mean? except that she had decided, rightly, Mrs. Ramsay thought (and she was very, very fond of Minta), to accept that good fellow, who might not be brilliant, but then, thought Mrs. Ramsay, realising that James was tugging at her, to make her go on reading aloud the Fisherman and his Wife, she did in her own heart infinitely prefer boobies to clever men who wrote dissertations; Charles Tansley, for instance. To the Lighthouse Then the door sprang open and in they came, fresh as roses, staring, wide awake, as if this coming into the diningroom after breakfast, which they did every day of their lives, was a positive event to them, and so on, with one thing after another, all day long, until she went up to say good-night to them, and found them netted in their cots like birds among cherries and raspberries, still making up stories about some little bit of rubbish-something they had heard, something they had picked up in the garden. To the Lighthouse Then he went and stood by it and said, 'Flounder, flounder, in the sea, Come, I pray thee, here to me; For my wife, good 11sabil, Wills not as Pd have her will.' To the Lighthouse That was a good bit of work on the whole-his eight children. To the Lighthouse All the great men she had ever known, she thought, deciding that a rabbit must have got in, were like that, and it was good 70 for young men (though the atmosphere of lecture-rooms was stuffy and depressing to her beyond endurance almost) simply to hear him, simply to look at him. To the Lighthouse Minta, Andrew observed, was rather a good walker. To the Lighthouse Unfortunately, it was Good Friday and the Prado was shut. To the Lighthouse They all had to join in and sing the chorus, and shout out together: Damn your eyes, damn your eyes, but it would be fatal to let the tide come in and cover up all the good hunting-grounds before they got on to the beach. To the Lighthouse But, good heavens, he said to himself, putting his hand to his tie, I must not make a fool of myself.) To the Lighthouse Are you a good sailor, Mr. Tansley?' she asked. To the Lighthouse It was like reading a good book again, for she knew the end of that story, since it had happened twenty years ago, and life, which shot down even from this dining-room table in cascades, heaven knows where, was sealed up there, and lay, like a lake, placidly between its banks. To the Lighthouse Probably, Mr. Bankes thought, as Tansley abused the government, there is a good deal in what he says. To the Lighthouse Success would be good for him. To the Lighthouse He remembered that because he always thought it such a good name for a villain. To the Lighthouse No, Charles Tansley would put them both right in a second about books, but it was all so mixed up with, Am I saying the right thing? Am I making a good impression? that, after all, one knew more about him than about Tolstoi, whereas, what Paul said was about the thing, simply, not himself, nothing else. To the Lighthouse Is it good, is it bad, is it right or wrong? Where are we all going to? and so on. To the Lighthouse Then feeling for her shawl and remembering that she had wrapped it round the boar's skull, she got up, and pulled the window down another inch or two, and heard the wind, and got a breath of the perfectly indifferent 115 chill night air and murmured good-night to Mildred and left the room and let the tongue of the door slowly lengthen in the lock and went out. To the Lighthouse He was very good. To the Lighthouse He would always be worrying about his own books-will they be read, are they good, why aren't they better, what do people think of me? Not liking to think of him so, and wondering if they had guessed at dinner why he suddenly became irritable when they talked about fame and books lasting, wondering if the children were laughing at that, she twitched the stocking out, and all the fine gravings came drawn with steel instruments about her lips and forehead, and she grew still like a tree which has been tossing and quivering and now, when the breeze falls, settles, leaf by leaf, into quiet. To the Lighthouse In those mirrors, the minds of men, in those pools of uneasy water, in which clouds for ever turn and shadows form, dreams persisted, and it was impossible to resist the strange intimation which every gull, flower, tree, man and woman, and the white earth itself seemed to declare (but if questioned at once to withdraw) that good triumphs, happiness prevails, order rules; or to resist the extraordinary stimulus to range hither and thither in search of some absolute good, some crystal of intensity, remote from the known pleasures and familiar virtues, something alien to the processes of domestic life, single, hard, bright, like a diamond in the sand, which would render the possessor secure. To the Lighthouse 'Good-evening, Mrs. McNab,' she would say. To the Lighthouse ''Good-evening, Mrs. McNab,'' she said, and told cook to keep a plate of milk soup for her-quite thought she wanted it, carrying that heavy basket all the way up from town. To the Lighthouse They had reached, she felt, a sunny island where peace dwelt, sanity reigned and the sun for ever shone, the blessed island of good boots. To the Lighthouse What 158 was the good of doing it then, and she heard some voice saying she couldn't paint, saying she couldn't create, as if she were caught up in one of those habitual currents in which after a certain time experience forms in the mind, so that one repeats words without being aware any longer who originally spoke them. To the Lighthouse (It must have altered the design a good deal when she was sitting on the step with James. To the Lighthouse Mercifully one need not say, very briskly, crossing the lawn to greet old Mrs. Beckwith, who would be coming out to find a corner to sit in, 'Oh, good-morning, Mrs. Beckwith! What a lovely day! Are you going to be so bold as to sit in the sun? Jasper's hidden the chairs. To the Lighthouse One glided, one shook one's sails (there was a good deal of movement in the bay, boats were starting oft) between things, beyond things. To the Lighthouse
